This week’s drought monitor is once again improved but unfortunately most of us have now gone a week without any meaningful rain and we’ll likely start heading in the opposite direction. There’s a chance for a few showers Sunday as a front sags through but not looking like much.

There’s a slight chance for some naked-eye aurora (northern lights)sightings at our latitude tonight as strong (G3) geomagnetic storms with isolated periods of severe (G4) activity arrive.

Probably worth a peak north after sunset. Skies will be mostly clear so we have that going for us.

Pretty interesting visible satellite this evening showing a surface low spinning off the Outer Banks. This low is non-tropical in nature and set to slowly pull away tomorrow but a good reminder that hurricane season officially began on June 1st.

Feels like we're a bit overdue in terms of an impactful tropical system here in Virginia. One may be needed to finally rid the ongoing drought.

Happy 1st day of meteorological summer! Just 20 days until daylight starts getting shorter (June 21st), but still about 50 days away from our climatological hottest day of the year (July 21st).

Hope everyone is enjoying this super nice, relatively cool end to May. Meteorological summer officially starts tomorrow and looks like true summer-like weather returns later this week and it’s downright hot again by next weekend. Still no meaningful rains in sight.

Chilly night incoming! Check out tonight’s forecast low temperatures. Wouldn’t be surprised if a few isolated spots in the Shenandoah Valley reach the upper 30s.

Rockingham County ground water levels continue to rise after the recent rains which is good news for those that rely on wells. We're still running behind where we were at this point last year but have made up a lot of ground with this wet stretch recharging soils and aquifers.

Here's a look at total estimated rainfall from our recent wet stretch (14 day total) and the updated drought monitor. We really put a dent in drought conditions across the Shenandoah Valley and NOVA but still have work to do south of there. Please note this drought monitor only takes into account rainfall that fell through Tuesday. Unfortunately, looks like we may avoid any additional meaningful rainfall over the next 10 days.

Major changes are on the way today as a cold front sinks south bringing with it a nice humidity drop. This front just crossed the Mason Dixon line and we’re already seeing some nice dew point falls behind it. Northerly winds will pick up as this front works through so today will be the start of what looks to be a very nice next several days with relatively cool and dry conditions for late May.

The next several days are going to be very nice as temperatures stay cool and humidity crashes behind the front. Canadian high pressure will remain centered to our north but still looks like a couple “chilly” nights with Saturday night currently looking the coldest with widespread 40s west of the Blue Ridge and probably even some 30s up in the western mountains. Solid weekend for late May!
