54 years ago, on Saturday 14th August 1971, Cardiff Gay Liberation Front held ‘gay day’ in Bute Park, attended by about 20 people. Earlier, members had joined the end of a trade union march through the city. Shouting through a loudspeaker, they urged, “End discrimination against homosexuals” and “Come to Gay Lib at RIB” (their meeting place in Charles St). It generated a lot of public and press interest. The event was organised by Howard Llewellyn with Stuart Neale of Plaid Cymru and preceded GLF’s first Gay Pride in London 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️
