Volunteer for the 2026 National Recreational Boating Safety Survey!

The National Recreational Boating Safety Survey (NRBSS) is a nationwide survey sponsored by the U.S. Coast Guard to understand how many people go boating, what types of boats they use, and how often they are on the water. As part of the survey, we are asking for volunteers to complete a brief sign-up page asking about their boating habits and share their contact information with the Coast Guard so a wide range of boaters can be invited to participate in the larger NRBSS survey later in the year.

Before heading out on the water, make sure your boat is safe and compliant!

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary offers free Vessel Safety Checks (VSCs) to help identify potential issues before they become problems. There are no penalties if your boat doesn’t pass—just helpful tips and peace of mind for a safer day on the water.

Plus, if you pass, you get a decal to show that YOU EXCEL at safe boating.

Around the Western Basin, it’s always imitative to keep a sharp lookout, especially after heavy rain storms. Storm debris can easily cause damage!

Always pay attention and maintain full visibility when operating a vessel.

We’re in the middle of National Safe Boating Week! Check out these tips from our friends at Ohio State Parks. Our Vice Flotilla Commander will be on WTOL during the 4:00 hour talking more about the week!

🚤 National Safe Boating Week is May 17–23!

Before you launch, take a moment to make safety part of your plan. Whether you’re casting a line, enjoying a ride, or simply soaking up the sun, a few simple habits can save lives—starting with wearing a life jacket.

Did you know?
75% of recreational boating deaths are due to drowning—and 87% of those victims weren’t wearing a life jacket.

This week (and every week), ODNR encourages all boaters to:
✔️ Wear a properly fitted, U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket
✔️ Take a boating safety course
✔️ Make a float plan and share it with someone on shore
✔️ Use an engine cut-off switch—it’s the law
✔️ Stay alert and check the forecast
✔️ Stay sober behind the wheel
✔️ Bring a waterproof communication device

Before your first trip, inspect your life jackets. Make sure they’re in good shape—and ready when you need them most.

Let’s make this a summer of safe boating in Ohio.
