ARL showcased its 3D-printed drone, SPARTA (Soldier Portable Autonomous Reconnaissance Transitioning Aircraft), which combines takeoff and landing capabilities of a helicopter with flight capabilities of an airplane. Developed and continuously improved hand-in-hand with Soldier feedback, SPARTA is designed to meet their unique operational needs.

ARL researchers also participated as judges and exhibitors at the first "Army Best Drone Warfighter Competition" in Huntsville, AL, this week. Gen. David Hodne, Commanding General of the U.S. Army Transformation and Training Command (T2COM), visited the ARL booth and engaged with our team, Dr. John Gerdes, Dr. Todd Henry, Dr. Asha Hall, and Dr. John Hrynuk, while learning about SPARTA’s capabilities.

ARL has pioneered cold spray technology, revolutionizing vehicle maintenance and repair for the Army by enabling faster and more durable repairs. As highlighted in National Defense Magazine, the lab is combining decades of research with cutting-edge advancements in AI, empowering Soldiers with innovative tools to enhance readiness and efficiency in the field.

“I think that what you find with all of these technologies is that our Soldiers are some of the most intelligent, creative people that we have,” said ARL’s Michael Nicholas. “And they will do amazing work if you give them the right tools and you train them how to use them, and that’s exactly what we’re seeing.”

At DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory, our researchers connect Soldiers directly with emerging technologies to strengthen readiness and lethality. Through programs like Catalyst Pathfinder and Accelerating force, we work alongside Soldiers in realistic settings so our researchers can rapidly improve innovations, gather critical feedback, and accelerate adoption across the force.

ARL, the Civil-Military Innovation Institute and Army units, including the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), will launch the FY 2026 Rapid Operational Innovation Detachment experimentation campaign. This Catalyst Pathfinder event will be the first in a series of experimentation events that tap into real-world training environments to accelerate technology breakthroughs for frontline Soldiers.
