Sometimes alcohol can lead to unintended consequences, and when it comes to sexual encounters, consent should always be clear.

Consent means a mutual, clear agreement to engage in any sexual activity. It’s about setting and respecting boundaries, and it can be withdrawn at any time.

A few key reminders:
• No one can give consent if they are incapacitated by drugs or alcohol
• Consent to one activity doesn’t mean consent to others
• Agreements and boundaries (like using protection) must be respected
• Anyone can change their mind at any point

Alcohol and drugs don’t automatically mean someone can’t consent, but they can make it harder to communicate and recognize boundaries. When in doubt, pause and check in.

If someone is disoriented, struggling to move, or unconscious, they cannot give consent. Engaging in sexual activity in those situations is sexual assault.

Even in relationships, consent still matters, every time.

When alcohol or drugs are involved, the best thing you can do is communicate clearly, check in often, and respect each other’s boundaries.

ℹWhat to Expect When Reporting Child Abuse or Neglect
Reporting suspected child abuse can feel overwhelming, but knowing what to expect can make it easier to take that important step.
🔹 You only need suspicion – You do not need proof. If something doesn’t seem right, it’s okay to report it.
🔹 Be prepared to share information – Helpful details may include:
• Child’s name, age, and gender
• Address or location
• School attended
• Names of parents or guardians
• Description of your concerns
🔹 Location matters – Knowing where the child lives or goes to school helps responders act quickly.
🔹 If reporting to law enforcement – You will likely speak with a dispatcher first. Your information will be forwarded to a deputy or officer, who may contact you for additional details.
🔹 What happens next – All reports are taken seriously and investigated thoroughly. The child’s safety and best interest are always the top priority.
🔹 Privacy protections – If a report is released (e.g. Through a Colorado Open Records Act Request), identifying information about the child is removed unless accessed by authorized parties.
🔹 How to report – To report suspected child abuse or neglect happening in Montezuma County, call Cortez Dispatch at 970-565-8454, or call/text 911 for emergencies.
🔹 Anonymous reporting options – Reports can be made anonymously through the Crime Watch mobile app or website https://crimewatch.net/us/co/montezuma/cortez-pd/178700/webforms/submit-tip (note: not monitored 24/7).
You can also report confidentially to CO4Kids by calling 844-264-5437.
⚠️ If you suspect abuse or neglect, don’t wait. Speak up. You could make a life-changing difference.

Did you know that while you’re sharing information during an emergency call, dispatchers are already sending help to your location, even if they continue asking additional questions?
Modern technology and the CAD system (Computer Aided Dispatch) allow dispatchers to access and share real‑time data, ensuring responders get the most accurate information as quickly as possible.

Reporting sexual violence is an important step in holding offenders accountable. Without a report, law enforcement cannot investigate and prosecutors cannot move forward with a case.

If you choose to report, whether by calling 9-1-1, visiting our office or another police station, or speaking with an deputy at a hospital, you will be put in contact with one of our trained detectives. We understand this process can feel overwhelming, but knowing what to expect can help:

• Your report will be taken in a private setting
• The process may take time, and follow-up interviews may occur
• You can take breaks at any time
• Some questions may feel difficult or intrusive, but they help clarify details
• You may be asked similar questions more than once to gain clarity
• You are allowed to have a support person or request a victim advocate

Detectives work to gather clear, reliable information and build a strong case, including documenting what happened, evidence of force or coercion, and lack of consent.

You are not alone. Support is available through RAINN’s National Sexual Assault Hotline, via call, text, or chat, where you can be connected with a victim advocate for guidance and support throughout the process.

If you or someone you know needs help, please reach out.
