Join us in wishing Macky a happy 4th birthday! His family celebrated by hosting a blood drive. 💛

A little over a year ago, Macky was diagnosed with lymphoma. During his intense chemo treatments, he required blood transfusions.

His mom recalls her gratitude that blood was available: "Here’s this little boy who needs something immediately, and it was there and ready for him because people had taken the time to donate,” she said. “He was able to receive blood, and immediately his color changed. It made an immediate difference, and I could physically see the change in him. It just stuck with me how important that was.”

Macky's cancer went into remission last July, and he's now happy and healthy. His family has turned their focus to encouraging others to give blood and hosting blood drives.

“It’s important to donate blood,” said Macky's mom. “It takes very little time. You might not think you’re needed, but you are. Every single person that donates is needed.”

Platelet are a part of your blood that help stop bleeding. This is why a low platelet count can be dangerous. Cancer treatments like chemo & bone marrow transplants can cause a patient's platelet counts to plummet. The need for platelets is ENORMOUS - and this week we're looking for more donors to help ensure patient care isn't delayed. Please learn more about platelet donation & sign up to give ASAP at rcblood.org/3w1nT0R.

THIS STORY IS GIVING US ALL THE FEELS! Many of us look forward to the email telling us what hospital received our donation, but for Mara, her most recent email was extra special. Her donation went to the hospital where her daughter was treated for and beat leukemia. Her daughter, Faya, who is now 5 and healthy, received more than 40 blood and platelet transfusions during her cancer treatments. Read the words she posted in the American Red Cross Platelet Donors Group earlier this week on the photo. 🥰

We love stories like this and are so grateful for each of you who roll up a sleeve to give patients like Faya more birthdays. Sign up to give again: rcblood.org/3M4NRWT

WE LOVE THIS! ❤️ This weekend Andre, William and Levi commemorated Black History Month by giving blood.

This year's Black History Month theme focuses on the importance of Black health and wellness. Sickle cell disease is an enduring and often invisible health disparity in the U.S. that disproportionately impacts the Black community. Blood transfusions can make a lifesaving difference, and donors who are Black may have the most compatible blood.

The Red Cross is working with organizations across the country to expand blood donation opportunities in Black communities and help grow the number of blood donors who are Black to help patients with sickle cell disease. Learn more about why African American blood donations are important and sign up to give or host a drive in your community: rcblood.org/3s9oPhm

The American Red Cross Blood Donors is currently experiencing a severe blood shortage. If you haven't already, please consider donating today. There are several upcoming blood drives in Livingston County, New York. Click the link to find the one nearest you.
Merry Christmas or however you celebrate.
Went today to give at the 21 Hours of Giving at the Oakdale Event Center, Oakdale, MN. As always, such a well organized, 2 day event with fabulous singers, musicians, food, drink and prizes. Of course, the give-away of the annual tee-shirts that I've collected over the years. Thanks to all those Red Cross workers there today. It was another well attended event and they were all so wonderful even though they were working so hard to keep up. It is truly a "warm and fuzzy" for me knowing that I could help with someone's life.
I'm CMV negative (and O+), is there anything extra I'm supposed to do when I donate? Do the staff already know when I book the appointment so they will have the pediatric bags, or is there something I'm missing when I schedule a donation? A few donations ago, I casually asked if my blood was going to help a baby. I was told they didn't have pediatric bags (or something like that). Not 2 days after I donated, there was an appeal for CMV negative blood. I hate the thought of a baby needing blood, me having it and eager to give it, and a bureaucratic error keeping my blood from helping them. So is it just automatic or am I supposed to do anything beyond just scheduling a donation in the app? Thanks.
I’ve always donated blood because I believe it is a simple and free way to really help people and maybe even save a life. My Dad died in October from an aortic aneurysm. The night he died, I was able to see just how much blood is often needed to even try to save a life. As I sat in the ER and looked around the room, I saw the bags and bags of empty blood that they had used to try to save my own Father’s life. Sorry for the graphic picture I’m painting but it made me happy in that heartbreaking moment thinking of my blood donations over the years possibly helping a family like us and I wished I could personally thank the people who took that hour out or so of their day to try to help save my Dad. Yesterday was my first donation since he died and I believe in signs that he is still with me and I also believe a red cardinal that comes to my yard is my friend Father visiting me and when I was done donating yesterday they gave me this t-shirt and I’m taking it as a sign that my Dad is happy and healthy somewhere with my Friend's Dad having some laughs. The blood supply is dangerously low at the moment so if you have time the next few weeks and looking for something to do, spend an hour saving someone’s life. I promise you’ll feel amazing after and if you give over the next few weeks, you’ll get this t-shirt too.
Would it be good for Red Cross to give guidance to donors re: the relative shortages of platelets / whole blood / plasma? So for example a donor arrives to make a donation and the donor is asked to switch from the scheduled donation type to another type (if the donor is eligible to make that other type). My understanding is the need for platelets is usually greater just because it has only a 5 day shelf life. But sometimes unusual things happen and it's better to give the type of donation that's needed most.
With the recent spate of tornadoes I'm wondering if whole blood is more urgently needed now than platelets. I'll make a similar post on the Red Cross platelet donors FB group.
Would like to donate blood. I'm O positive blood
I would like to donate blood. I'm O +
