We all have our own way of marking today. For me I carry forward the price paid by extremism. Whether it be in the horror of the events of this day 22 years ago, or the countless less horrid examples that visit us so frequently in this “modern” world, extremism is always destructive, a betrayal of our shared humanity. Today invites us to focus on that destruction and reject the toll it always extracts. Our memory today is of lives destroyed as buildings collapsed. With the fuel of that memory It is ours to begin our tomorrows commited to consideration, embracing each other as reasonable and giving.

Whoa brain. Whoa.

Bit of fun for the day…
The Thatcher Effect.
This illusion highlights a flaw in how our brains work - we can't process an upside-down face because we are programmed to recognise faces the right way up.
We create a mental map by recognising the face in pieces - eyes, mouth, and nose.
So when we're presented with an upside-down, Thatcherised image, it's not processed properly.
We know it's upside down, but because we so rarely encounter upside-down faces, we haven't evolved to interpret the expressions on them.
The facial features look fine, so our brains assume the rest of the face is as well.
That's why we don't see anything out of the ordinary until we turn the face the ‘right way’ up.

Corning, Corning, Corning. Cool now, and positioned to lift ourselves to the next level in each aspect of the community. Just wait and see how even better we will be.

Little Joe is the historical centerpiece of Corning, New York. Towering at 185 Feet tall, you can see Little Joe from anywhere in downtown Corning! Built in 1912 by Corning Glass Works to signify the successful and innovative vertical draw process used to create thermometer tubing, the Little Joe tower continues to be a symbol of pride in the Corning Valley.

One last campaign for Corning Mayor begins with petitioning for signatures to get on the ballot. Sue, my devoted helper, and I started out on Princeton and Pulteney, at the house Sue grew up in. This photo is of her bedroom window. Why a photo of her bedroom window? Can’t really say. Seemed meaningful somehow. Anyway, as we say in campaign lingo… “Tallyho.“

Endorsement of Max Della Pia for Congress
by Mayor Bill Boland
August 18, 2022

I am endorsing Max Della Pia for Congress in the special election August 23. I do so believing that Max seeks this office to serve, to be of unselfish service to our District and to our country. Service that continues his life of dedicated service beyond his military career. Service to us, encouraging us to work out together what divides us, is the center of Max’s appeal for support.

In my discussions with Max it shines through that he is authentic and cares deeply about the issues impacting all of us and the challenges we face together. When Max engages a group, he is an effective communicator. But it’s when Max is one on one with folks that you see most sharply his thoughtfulness, openness to listening, desire to consider points of view that may not be his own, and his undeniable caring for others.

To my eye, that thoughtfulness and openness places Max in what I see as the “Vibrant Center” of politics, a place where reasonable people seek to engage with each other openly, fairly, earnestly, and most importantly, effectively, to create solutions beneficial to all. It’s a middle ground, where much of the country stands positioned, ground not lacking in substance or passion for individual points of view, but rather a dynamic place where the overriding commitment is to work things out and forge things that are good, things that move us all forward and better our lives. It is a “coalition of the reasonable”, a coalition requiring no membership, or dues, or contract. Instead, it is an informal bond between Americans inviting and engaging in those difficult conversations that lead us to fair solutions. It does not seek an end to partisanship, but rather, when entering into discussion, a disposition toward nonpartisanship, moving strongly away from toxic dogma, toward solutions and an end to the heart wrenching division in our politics. That’s exactly where I see Max, a centrist, a principled centrist, a reasonable person, driven by fairness and his willingness to serve, serve us.

I have experienced him as a good person, seeking office for all the right reasons, centered on an unselfish commitment to service. I support him as a person, and as a political leader, and encourage everyone reading this to get out and vote on the 23rd. Your vote matters. Please consider voting for Max, a positive person who knows how to make a positive difference. A person of service.
