Housing is one of the most pressing issues facing families here in Lunenburg and across Nova Scotia. As I hear from my neighbours and friends, I know just how hard it’s become to find affordable, safe, and suitable housing. This is an issue that hits home for me personally, as I too am navigating the challenges of finding a new home for my family in our community. That’s why I’m proud to stand with Zach Churchill and the Nova Scotia Liberals in our plan to deliver a better deal on housing.
Our commitment to building 80,000 homes by 2032 is bold, but it’s exactly the kind of action we need to solve the housing crisis. Tim Houston’s PC government has failed to address housing in any meaningful way, and while the NDP has proposed some good ideas, their policies don’t go far enough. Nova Scotians need real solutions, and the Liberals are prepared to deliver.
Our plan includes innovative approaches that will make a tangible difference for families, seniors, and marginalized communities:
Re-thinking municipal zoning standards to speed up housing developments and cut red tape, while ensuring that restrictive covenants are eliminated.
Investing in innovative building technologies, like modular housing and mass timber, to lower costs and build more homes faster.
Fixing the broken property tax system to make it fairer, encourage development, and remove barriers for downsizing seniors and first-time homebuyers.
Doubling non-profit housing stock and supporting vulnerable populations, such as African Nova Scotians, Mi’kmaq communities, and women fleeing domestic violence.
Expanding co-op housing to create 2,000 new units, offering affordable and community-centered housing options.
We’re also committed to ensuring that no Nova Scotian pays more than 30% of their income on housing—a benchmark of affordability that we must achieve.
As someone who’s dedicated much of my career to advocating for youth and families, I understand how deeply the housing crisis affects every aspect of our lives. From mental health to economic stability, safe and affordable housing is the foundation that supports us all.
