Congratulations to all of the graduating seniors in HD45! Every year, I write a letter to each senior, congratulating them on their incredible achievement and providing some things to reflect upon as they step forward into this new chapter. Years of hard work and dedication have led each student to this moment and I sincerely congratulate each and every senior on this extraordinary accomplishment!

Last day of early voting in the Democratic and Republican run-offs. The polls are open 7am-7pm. Unlike last night, it’s not pouring, so you can vote without getting soaked like Lark and I did yesterday!

Today and yesterday, as the Chair of the Texas Energy and Climate Caucus, I’m leading a tour to Abilene, Texas to see the Stargate data center project and Abilene Christian University’s small modular nuclear reactor.

A bipartisan group of legislators, staff, and policy experts are discussing policy solutions for the next legislative session. Across the political spectrum, legislators are hearing concerns from their districts about data center projects and are ready to act.

It’s a bittersweet Mother’s Day for my family this year. Tomorrow we lay our matriarch, my grandmother Ardith Zwiener, to rest at the Texas State Cemetary.

But I can’t think of a better way to spend the day than arranging flowers for her service tomorrow.

Wishing you and yours a Mother’s Day filled with connection to family today.

Last month, we had a fantastic Texas House Democratic Caucus retreat in Houston! I had a great time connecting with colleagues and hearing from guest speakers like Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Congressional candidate and Tejano star, Bobby Pulido. We celebrated and reflected on all of our hard work on behalf of Texans in the 89th session, the continued fight against Republicans' racist gerrymandering schemes, and strategic preparation to continue delivering for our communities in the 90th .

Last session and through the interim we've fought tirelessly for fully funded public schools, affordable healthcare access, freedom of speech, voting rights, and more. For my part in the fight, I was honored with the Point of Order Champion Award, highlighting my usage of the House Rules to fight against harmful bills on the floor. Texas House Dems. are energized and ready to continue the work for a better Texas and a better nation.

Huge thanks to Texas State Employees Union (CWA Local 6186) for hosting a critical May Day event and discussion highlighting the intersection between workers' rights and free speech. It is energizing to see the efforts of educators and students across the state in resisting attempts to limit academic freedom and student expression.

Regrettably, we stand at a dark moment for the First Amendment and labor rights in Texas. A 30-year stranglehold of GOP uniparty control, the breakdown of checks and balances on executive authority, and decades of Governor Abbott's hand-selection of university regents has created a wholly totalitarian environment across our campuses. With a mere tweet, the Governor can single-handedly force the withdraw of students whom he has deemed political adversaries or call for the firing of a tenured professor.

Now more than ever, we must commit ourselves to the defense of free speech and higher education. Constitutionally-protected speech cannot determine whether a teacher has a job or a student receives an education. We must vote out those that would seek to claw back our civil liberties and workers' rights. As the 90th Session approaches, I remain committed to supporting our communities and our educators, and to fighting tirelessly to defend free expression and worker protections.

Last week, the Supreme Court reinterpreted the most important civil rights law of the last century, and in doing so handed Republican legislatures across the country a permission slip to follow Texas’ lead — cracking and packing Black and Latino voters into districts where their voices won’t matter.

Your Texas House Democratic Caucus started a national fight when we broke quorum last year, and other states have answered. California has passed Prop 50, and Virginians passed their redistricting amendment a couple of weeks ago. The Court's ruling is a call to every state with the power to act — finish what we started together. Voting rights are under attack and other states must move with the urgency this moment demands.

The fight to stop Republican racial gerrymandering and end Trump's congressional steal continues — in the courts, in Congress which has the power to restore the rights that the Supreme Court took, and at the ballot box where Texans will get the final word.
