Zohran Mamdani will be the next mayor of New York City, becoming the first Muslim and person of South Asian descent — as well as the youngest in over a century — to hold the position.
The 34-year-old, Ugandan-born democratic socialist defeated former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an Independent, and Republican Curtis Sliwa in Tuesday's election, according to a race call by the Associated Press.
It's a remarkable ascent for Mamdani, who was a relatively unknown state assemblymember representing Queens when he entered the crowded mayoral race last year. He went on to win June's Democratic primary by 12 percentage points, quickly becoming one of the country's most popular and polarizing politicians along the way. ~ https://www.npr.org/2025/11/04/nx-s1-5597788/election-results-zohran-mamdani-new-york-city-mayor?utm_source=firefox-newtab-en-us
DEFINITION OF DEMOCRATIC SOCIALIST
A democratic socialist believes in a
democratically run political system alongside a socialist economic system where the means of production are socially owned and controlled. This ideology seeks to shift power from corporations to workers and the community, advocating for policies that increase economic equality and social welfare, such as universal healthcare, public education, and stronger labor protections. Unlike authoritarian models, democratic socialism is committed to political democracy and civil rights.
LET'S ADDRESS THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM
The N***s did use the term "National Socialist" in their party's name and platform, but they were not socialists in the traditional economic or political sense.
Their use of the term was primarily a propaganda tactic to attract working-class voters who were being drawn to genuine socialist and communist movements in Germany at the time.
Key distinctions from actual socialism:
Opposition to the Left: Once in power, the N***s violently persecuted and systematically eliminated socialists, communists, and trade union leaders, sending them to concentration camps and liquidating their parties.
Private Property: While the N**i government heavily regulated the economy to align with state goals (especially war preparation), it preserved the core institution of private property. The state directed production and set prices, but businesses remained privately owned and many major German corporations profited immensely under the regime. The property of political opponents and Jews was, however, seized as part of a racist and authoritarian agenda, not a socialist one.
Economic Goals: The N***s' economic policies were driven by an ultranationalist, racist, and expansionist ideology, not the socialist goal of eliminating class inequality through collective ownership of the means of production. Hi**er explicitly stated that the good of the community (as defined by the N**i state and its racial ideology) took priority over the individual, but this was a form of extreme collectivism, not economic socialism.
Political Ideology: N***sm is historically classified as a far-right, fascist ideology, fundamentally opposed to the core tenets of left-wing socialism, such as internationalism and class equality.
In summary, the "socialism" in the N**i Party's name was a rhetorical device devoid of genuine socialist principles, used to appeal to a specific demographic while simultaneously being an enemy of true socialist movements and ideals. ~ https://history.uwo.ca/news/2024/a_look_at_claims_the_nazis_under_adolf_hitler_were_socialists.html
