Ecuador is evolving into a Digital Government. That is why FARO implemented a digital platform to influence evidence-based decision-making about COVID and disaster risks. Learn about the tool and its challenges and opportunities. 🤔

The COVID Integrated Risk and Response Tool, designed in partnership with us, was used in Ecuador to understand the threats of new COVID waves and potential build strategies. Its dimensions are social, economic, health, population density, and interactions, with 16 indicators.

The free-access COVID IRR tool studied all of Ecuador's provinces. With it, citizens could see the increase in COVID cases and understand potential risks, and local governments could use it to create new policies.

There are still some challenges when it comes to using digital platforms in public management in Ecuador:
🔺They still need to create strategies on how to actively involve the citizens.
🔺That the government wants to implement new technologies to create public policies.
🔺The lack of adequate data, especially for marginalized groups, increases their vulnerability. This could impact the response to a crisis, like the pandemic, where some countries lack strategic data-driven planning.
🔺It's necessary to improve digital education in the country.

Today is International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples. We reflect on a recent conversation we had with Karen Joseph from Reconciliation Canada at the What Works Summit. "Love is what drives us, it's the basis of our resilience. The person you really need to forgive is yourself- in order to be able to live your true values."

Karen shared the intense suffering experienced by her family and throughout the indigenous communities due to the former Residential Schools. The cultural genocide that was perpetuated left a legacy of broken communities, intergenerational trauma and anguish for the thousands of children who perished in the schools.

Karen's words remind us of the strength and resilience of Indigenous Peoples across the world whose human rights have been violated for hundreds of years.

More than 5.3 million people in Monterrey, the second largest city in Mexico, are going through the most extreme drought in its history, increasing inequality in the area. NASA's images show the crisis in the region.

Although the entire population is experiencing water stress, those who are suffering the most are the people who do not have access to buy drinking water or those who are in the most remote communities.

However, this city is not the only one under water stress. According to CONAGUA, more than 70% of Mexico is experiencing some type of drought because of climate change, which adds up to a total of 200 municipalities.

The crisis is worsened by the lack of adaptation strategies. There is a lack of equal distribution, environmental education, lack of maintenance of pipes, and water treatment.

Mexican's access to water and sanitation, a fundamental component of their basic human needs, is at risk. How can we help mitigate and adapt to the crisis when they are so close to "Day Zero"? What lessons can we learn for other countries?

Yes, climate change is a universal risk to our health and well-being. For starters, the combination of heatwaves and air quality is making things worse for your health.

The heatwave's impact goes beyond droughts. Heatwaves lead to even worst pollution conditions because the air becomes stagnant. If there are fires caused by the high temperatures, you can find more particle pollution in the air.

A recent study states that a group of workers in Delhi reported mild to severe symptoms caused by the heatwaves and air quality such as difficulty to breath, lung function impairment eye irritation, and more.

México ¿cómo vamos?, INCAE Business School Business School, and the Social Progress Imperative launched the Social Progress Index of Mexico, an analysis of each state's progress taking into account three dimensions: access to basic human needs, foundations of well-being, and opportunity. According to the Social Progress Index 2021, Mexico ranks in position 68 out of 168 countries. In the state-level results published by México, ¿cómo vamos? it stands out that: - There is an institutional recession in personal rights compared to 2011 due to less access to justice. - Mexico had a worse performance than the world average in access to higher education and personal security, consisting of an increase in homicides and violence, the perception of insecurity, and the presence of organized crime. Yo reconozco que soy una persona muy privilegiada a nivel profesional.

Todo mi vida soñé con tener un trabajo como el que tengo, un trabajo que me ha permitido crecer, aprender, conocer el mundo y posiciones tan diversas como fascinantes sobre nuestra definición de progreso, bienestar y sostenibilidad.

Este año celebro ya 7 años en el Social Progress Imperative.
Empecé como voluntario, luego coordinador, gerente, Gerente Global y ahora soy Director Global. Sin duda de todos estos años, este ha sido el más retador, pero en el cuál hemos visto como de mano de la innovación, el talento humano y el compromiso podemos brindar valor, información y alianzas a un mundo que cada vez necesita de datos confiables, accionables y relevantes para la toma de decisiones.

Muchos y muchas de ustedes son socios y compañeros en este viaje, por lo cuál les comparto nuestro último correo del año, con nuestros logros más destacados.

No sabemos que retos profesionales nos traerá este año, pero ojalá podamos seguir caminando juntos. Como siempre, mi agradecimiento a don Roberto AL por haberme motivado a unirme a esta aventura del progreso social.

What a year! It has been a challenging year, but it is so good to see that we have delivered our mission to the world: To use data to influence policies and investments to better serve all of humanity.

The People’s Report: Over 17,000 underrepresented voices worldwide shared how the pandemic transformed their lives. Localized indexes: The Orange County Equity Map in California, United States. Mexico ¿Cómo Vamos?: The Mexican Social Progress Index. South Africa Youth Progress Index.

I am so proud to see the expansion of our work and tools worldwide. It has not been easy, especially this year, but we made it! And we will come back stronger and even more strategic next year.

El Índice de Respuesta Integrado (IRR) es un instrumento creado por Social Progress Imperative para medir el riesgo que enfrentan los territorios al abordar la gestión de la pandemia. Implementarlo en Argentina puede ser una oportunidad importante para generar un diagnóstico integral sobre esto.

Un dato clave: esta herramienta necesita datos desagregados con actualizaciones frecuentes. Para ello, hay que mejorar la calidad de las fuentes disponibles y los sistemas de información actuales.
