We honor the life of Dr. Barbara Israel, a giant in community-based participatory research (CBPR) who dedicated her career to reshaping the relationship between academia and communities.

Her humanity reflected the core values of CBPR—shared leadership, mutual respect, and long-term partnership—and her work demonstrated what’s possible when communities are equal partners throughout the research process.

“It’s about who I’m working with and how we can collectively bring about change—that’s what inspires and motivates me.”

May her legacy endure in the communities, partnerships, and field shaped by her life’s work.
