This morning Somerville Public Schools welcomed new educators to SHS for orientation. Loved having the opportunity to welcome educators that have relocated from Montana and Colorado (welcome to Mass!), as well as educators that live here now and are so excited to also work in Somerville, neighbors stepping in as paraprofessionals for a change of pace and a way to make a meaningful impact, and community members beginning as substitutes with hopes of supporting our students year-round.

Great to see familiar and new faces to kick off the '26-'27 school year. A big thank you for choosing to be a part of our community and supporting our students and schools.

We are so lucky to have you with us!

Thanks to the staff and leadership team for the invite and for making such a warm welcome possible.

Be sure to stop by the school committee table!

Appreciated the opportunity to engage with my colleagues and the Somerville Public Schools executive leadership team this morning at Bow Market to kick off the '26-'27 school year.

Today's topic of conversation focused on re-engaging with SPS's Strategic Plan, that come December will be closing out it's second full year of implementation. Engaging with this document, asking questions, and better understanding where we are and where we're going was front and center. I hope to have more info/updates to share with you on this topic soon!

In the interim... wondering if you've had a chance to read through SPS's strategic plan recently? If not, check it out here:https://somerville.k12.ma.us/files/CentralAdmin_SPS_Strategic_Report_2530-11.25_compressed.pdf

The FY27 Massachusetts Budget has officially been signed into law!

A major win for public education is the creation of a new Foundation Budget Review Commission (FBRC) - a priority MASC has advocated for over many years. The Commission will review the Commonwealth's K-12 school funding formula for the first time since 2015, and MASC will have a seat at the table to help shape its recommendations.

Our FY27 Budget Summary highlights this milestone, along with the budget's major education investments and what they mean for school districts across the Commonwealth.

Hey Ward 2! Hope to see you tonight, 6/24 from 5-7p @ Lincoln Park (290 Washington St.) for Slice in The City! 🍕

Somerville community members are invited to the "Slice of the City" spring meet-up series. This new series of family-friendly pizza parties in the park offers attendees a new way to connect and engage with city leaders and staff, local elected officials, as well as neighbors, all while enjoying Somerville’s parks.

Events in each of the city's seven wards will occur throughout the month of May from 5 to 7 p.m. First up is in Ward 5 on Tuesday, May 5 at Trum Field Playground (1 Franey Road). Somerville Recreation will host kid’s activities, and refreshments and pizza will be provided. For more information and to find all event locations, visit somervillema.gov/slice.

Help inform how our next new school building will support students with a wide range of sensory, cognitive, social-emotional, and other needs.

Project architects and City staff will share information about how Universal Design principles will be applied throughout the building. Universal Design principles are meant to ensure that the school can be accessed and used by all people, regardless of age, size, ability, or how people process, communicate, or experience a space. Community members will then have the opportunity to ask questions, discuss, and provide feedback.
