As Memorial Day weekend approaches, the Ellensburg Police Department encourages everyone to celebrate safely and responsibly.

If your plans include traveling, attending gatherings, or spending time outdoors, please keep safety in mind:

🚘Drive sober and never get behind the wheel impaired.
🚖Buckle up and make sure all passengers are properly restrained.
📵Put the phone away and stay focused on the road.
🚧Slow down and watch for increased traffic, pedestrians, and cyclists.
🏠Plan ahead if you will be away from home and remember to lock your doors and secure valuables.
⚠Use extra caution around parks, neighborhoods, and public spaces where families and children may be active.

Memorial Day is also a time to honor and remember the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. As you gather with family and friends this weekend, please take a moment to reflect on the meaning of the holiday.

The hard work and dedication of the Kittitas County Sheriff’s office to get impaired drivers off the roads resulted in extra HVE funding to expand their efforts. Thank you to KCSO for making our roads safer and helping us to get everyone home safe.

Plan your sober ride home before you leave to drink and help everyone to arrive home safe.

**Summer DUI emphasis patrols are coming to Kittitas County.**

KCSO has received more than $47,000 in competitive state grant funding from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission to support dedicated DUI patrols from Memorial Day through Labor Day—the period when about 57% of all collisions in our county occur.

The goal is prevention: deter impaired driving, stop impaired drivers before they hurt someone, and keep county roads safer for residents and everyone traveling in Kittitas County.

This grant also recognizes the strong work already being done by KCSO deputies. DUI arrests by deputies went from 74 in 2023, to 98 in 2024 and 143 in 2025. We don’t measure success by arrests numbers--but this increase reflects improved training, focus, and effectiveness in identifying impaired drivers and removing them from the road.

Deputies working these emphasis patrols must have advanced DUI detection and enforcement training, and activity from the patrols will be reported to the Traffic Safety Commission.

Impaired driving contributes to approximately 47% of all traffic deaths. That's why this enforcement matters for our community and is a priority for us. Please plan ahead this summer: sober driver, rideshare, taxi, friend, or stay where you are.

The safest DUI arrest is the one that never has to happen.
