Previous research has found that over 80 percent of people with opioid use disorder (OUD) do not receive evidence-based, lifesaving medications. Although access to these medications is better in New York City than elsewhere in the United States, more than 100,000 people in the United States continue to die from drug overdoses each year.

An NYU Langone study finds patients who went to hospitals with inpatient addiction services had higher uptake of treatment for their opioid use disorder.

"Don't let the fear stop you. Achieve early. A lot of people in the able-bodied world will tell you to wait ... Most of the time, I think it's because they're afraid that if something doesn't go right for you, you will fall apart. I say to you, do things early."

S:US is proud to support the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) 34th Anniversary. On July 26, we celebrate this important civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in all areas of life, including jobs, schools, transportation, and all public and private places that are open to the general public. The purpose of the law is to make sure that people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else.

We honor and celebrate the diversity of people with disabilities – those with physical, intellectual/developmental disabilities, people with mental illness, and those with undiagnosed disabilities. We are dedicated to helping people lead their best lives by creating opportunities for meaningful relationships, full integration into the community, and personal growth.

Let's commemorate the ADA by continuing to advocate for a world where everyone, regardless of ability, can thrive and participate fully in society. Together, we can build a future that is inclusive, accessible, and supportive for all.

From building affordable and supportive housing for people who have been homeless, including veterans, to healthy food distribution programs in underserved communities, to health clinics serving people with mental health and substance challenges -- none of it would be possible without the support of our funders and generous donors, which now includes S:UStainers.

Please join the growing group of S:UStainers by making a gift of $1 a day, or a recurring donation of any amount. Together, let's build a brighter future for New Yorkers in need.

Services for the UnderServed (S:US) provides safe homes and essential services to over 37,000 New Yorkers each year. The people we serve are the most marginalized New Yorkers, including people with disabilities, people in poverty, and people facing homelessness.

Urban agriculture offers a multitude of economic and environmental benefits to New York City that are overlooked. When properly resourced, it can be utilized as a framework to achieve food justice and create a more sustainable food system rooted in equity, community power, and climate resiliency.

Community gardeners at sites like Kelly St Garden are climate stewards but too often, they fail to get the credit or funding they're due.

The tensions exposed by the City of Grants Pass v. Johnson Supreme Court case pit advocates of an enforcement-first strategy against advocates for the unhoused, who point to evidence from places like Houston and Atlanta that indicate a housing-first strategy is far more effective.

History indicates that safe, stable housing combined with social services works better than tough enforcement measures.
