For Regional Director Maria Ines C. Asuncion, leadership has never been about titles. It has always been about people. The learners whose dreams begin inside classrooms, the teachers who shape futures every day, and the communities that place their hope in education.

Long before she became Regional Director of the Department of Education Davao Region, Dr. Asuncion was simply a teacher.
She began her teaching career in 1995 at Holy Cross of Mintal, believing that education could change lives one child at a time.
From those early days in the classroom, she learned that every learner carries a unique story and every teacher has the power to help write a better ending.
That belief would guide her throughout her career.
She eventually became a Master Teacher, then a School Principal, before taking on greater responsibilities as Schools Division Superintendent, Assistant Regional Director, and Regional Director.
Each promotion was never merely a higher position. It was another opportunity to serve more learners, support more teachers, and build stronger schools.

Dr. Asuncion has always believed that those who lead learning must never stop learning themselves.
She earned her Bachelor of Elementary Education major in English from the University of the Philippines Diliman, followed by both her Master of Arts in Education and Doctor of Education degrees from the University of Southeastern Philippines.
Her pursuit of excellence also led her to qualify as a Career Executive Service Officer (CESO III) after successfully passing the Career Executive Service Board examinations.
But beyond academic credentials, what distinguishes her is her willingness to continuously grow so she can better serve others.

As a school leader, Dr. Asuncion became known for embracing innovation long before it became common practice.
She championed e-learning and constructivist approaches to teaching, helping educators adopt more learner-centered and technology-enabled instruction.
Her expertise later expanded beyond school leadership when she served as a Materials Development Manager and literacy specialist under the Basic Education Assistance for Mindanao (BEAMโAusAID) Project, where she helped develop learning resources and teacher training programs that strengthened literacy education across Mindanao.
Her work reflected a simple yet profound conviction: quality education begins with empowered teachers equipped with the right tools.

Throughout her career as Schools Division Superintendent in Panabo City and later in Davao City, Dr. Asuncion demonstrated that educational leadership is as much about compassion as it is about performance.
One of her most meaningful initiatives was the establishment of Balay Paglaum, a learning support program for Indigenous Peoples learners in Panabo City.
More than a project, it became a refuge of hope.
It provided culturally responsive support that encouraged Indigenous learners to remain in school, reducing dropout rates, and increasing participation among communities that often faced barriers to education.
Today, the initiative continues to be recognized as a model of inclusive education.

She served as Assistant Regional Director in both Davao Region and SOCCSKSARGEN before being appointed Regional Director of DepEd Caraga in 2023.
In Caraga, she led with the same philosophy that had guided her from the very beginning. She always believes that every learner deserves opportunities to excel, and every teacher deserves the support needed to succeed.
Under her leadership, Caraga celebrated historic milestones, including becoming the overall champion of the 2025 National Schools Press Conference and achieving its highest medal haul in the 2025 Palarong Pambansa.
Yet for those who worked with her, these victories were never simply about trophies.
They were the result of careful planning, shared accountability, and the collective efforts of educators inspired by a leader who believed in them.

On July 1, 2026, Dr. Maria Ines C. Asuncion returned to Davao Regionโthis time as Regional Director.

She recognized the strong systems already in place, affirmed the dedication of the people she would now lead, and expressed her commitment to strengthening, and not replacing, the foundations already built.
