Forestry Department and ABS Project Lead Cleansing Exercise at Nyambai Forest Complex.

The Department of Forestry, in partnership with the Access and Benefit-Sharing (ABS) Project, over the weekend conducted a major cleansing exercise at the Nyambai Forest Complex in Brikama as part of ongoing efforts to promote environmental conservation and protect the country’s forest resources.

The exercise was led by the Director of the Department of Forestry, Colonel Corr, and brought together representatives from the National Roads Authority (NRA), the Department of Forestry, the ABS Project, and various media houses. The Brikama Area Council also supported the initiative by providing waste collection trucks and a shovel to facilitate the removal and disposal of waste from the forest.

Speaking during the exercise, Director Corr underscored the urgent need for a change in public attitudes towards waste management, particularly among communities living in close proximity to the forest. He stressed that indiscriminate dumping of waste poses a serious threat to biodiversity, public health, and the long-term sustainability of the Nyambai Forest Complex.

The ABS Project Coordinator echoed these sentiments, calling on community members and all stakeholders to take collective responsibility for keeping the forest clean and protecting its rich biodiversity. He emphasized that conserving the Nyambai Forest Complex is essential not only for environmental sustainability but also for safeguarding the biological resources that support livelihoods and future generations.

Director Corr further warned that the Department of Forestry will enforce strict measures against individuals found illegally dumping waste within the forest, reaffirming the government’s commitment to protecting the country’s forest ecosystems.

The cleansing exercise forms part of broader collaborative efforts by the Department of Forestry and the ABS Project to raise public awareness, strengthen community participation in forest conservation, and promote responsible environmental stewardship.

🌿 Wrapped up a productive technical review on the Nagoya Protocol / Access and Benefit-Sharing (ABS) project documents in Mansakonko!

The review brought together environmental experts, legal professionals, and academics to critically examine the draft ABS Gender Action Plan, the Gambia Forestry Curriculum, and key provisions for the Access and Benefit-Sharing (ABS) Bills. Through engaging discussions, expert insights, and collaborative contributions, we made meaningful progress toward strengthening sustainable biodiversity conservation and equitable benefit-sharing for Gambians.

Grateful for the strong collaboration and partnerships with all participating institutions and stakeholders who contributed to these important national processes.

🌳 Big win for conservation in Kiang West National Park, Dumbuto! The National GEF Council joined us today for a monitoring visit to our Nagoya Protocol/ABS project site. Thrilled to showcase the thriving trees we've planted , a testament to sustainable biodiversity efforts and community partnerships!

🌲 Urgent Update: Fire in Kabafita Forest 🔥

A wildfire broke out this afternoon in Kabafita Forest, a critical biodiversity hotspot safeguarded under our Access and Benefit-Sharing (ABS) initiatives aligned with the Nagoya Protocol.

Thanks to the rapid response of local teams, the blaze has been contained. However, the damage threatens native species that are essential for medicine, agriculture, and sustainable livelihoods.

This incident is a stark reminder: protecting biodiversity isn’t optional—it’s essential. Strong ABS frameworks ensure these natural resources are preserved and that communities fairly share in their benefits.

Recovery efforts are now underway. 🌱
