Couldn’t agree more.

Ohio taxpayers are sending $2.5 billion to private and religious schools. Even if you agree with this, don’t taxpayers deserve transparency and accountability? A group of bipartisan lawmakers thinks so, but Ohio House Speaker Matt Huffman doesn’t.

Republican state leaders gave away billions in secret tax breaks extending for decades to some of the richest corporations in the world while at the same time claiming not to have the resources to appropriately fund our schools and other vital public services. This story epitomizes the raw deal Ohioans have been getting over the past 16 years of one-party rule. Think it’s time for a change?!?

Ohio officials have approved data center tax breaks for 18 companies, including 40-year deals for Meta, Google and Amazon.

Dani is right. The rush to gut home health care options for Medicaid recipients is cruel, and a shameless attempt to score cheap political points going into election season in spite of potential life-and-death consequences for thousands of Ohioans. Time to put the brakes on HB 795.

Excellent insights from North Shore Federation of Labor’s Brian Pearson. “Artificial intelligence can improve lives, reduce dangerous work, and expand human potential. But that future depends on whether workers have the power to shape how these technologies are used. The future of AI should not be decided for workers. It should be built with them.” I look forward to partnering with the AFL-CIO in advocating for good public policies that ensure workers are at the center of decision making on these vital issues.

ENDORSEMENT ALERT! I am very honored and proud to announce that I have earned the endorsement of SEIU District 1199 in my campaign for state representative. SEIU District 1199 represents nearly 25,000 healthcare, social service and public sector workers and is part of the Service Employees International Union whose 2 million members make it the largest union of health care workers and the fastest growing union in the world.

Many thanks to President Becky Williams and SEIU 1199 leaders who have placed their confidence in me. Back in 2011, I volunteered more hours than I can count at SEIU’s Columbus headquarters working on the campaign to repeal SB 5 and protect collective bargaining rights for Ohio’s educators, healthcare workers and other public servants. Our partnership has been strong ever since.

My fight for strong communities and a strong Ohio is well aligned with SEIU’s vision for a Just Society: “where all workers are valued and all people respected—no matter where we come from or what color we are; where all families and communities can thrive; and where we leave a better and more equitable world for generations to come.” Let’s make that vision a reality!

Want to talk about fraud? Let’s talk about charter schools, ECOT, and Jon Husted. Thanks to Steve Dyer for connecting all the dots.

Not sure bringing Ka$h and the Trump Gang to Ohio to highlight fraud is a great idea when vulnerable U.S. Sen. Jon Husted perpetuated the largest taxpayer fraud in Ohio history.

Thanks to everyone who supported me, Rep. Bride Rose Sweeney, and Rep. Chris Glassburn for our Columbus fundraiser yesterday. I’m deeply grateful to the many friends who joined us for the event or made a contribution. It was also great to have some time at Huntington Park with the Ohio House Democratic caucus and candidates who are going to flip red seats to blue in November. Beautiful night in Columbus!

Are state leaders trying a back-door approach to privatizing certain public schools? If so, this outrageous move must be stopped.

Canton City Schools Superintendent Jeff Talbert: “This waiver revives provisions from Senate Bill 127 that were removed after strong opposition, raising serious concerns about transparency and accountability. It opens the door for public schools to be turned over to private for-profit operators that lack demonstrated expertise and are not accountable to local communities, while allowing taxpayer dollars to flow to entities without transparency. True school improvement requires sustained investment, experienced educators, and strong local partnerships—not unproven models that risk undermining public education and community control.”

A draft proposal Ohio is preparing for a waiver to opt out of certain requirements under the nation’s main K-12 law also describes how the state could close or privatized low-performing public school buildings.

Senators Bill Blessing and Kent Smith have introduced common-sense bipartisan legislation to require accountability for how over $1 billion of annual state funding on Ohio’s voucher programs is being spent and the academic impact of those programs. Legislators in both the Senate and House should act quickly to pass this “Take the Dough, We Gotta Know” Act. I wholeheartedly agree with Blessing, who said, “If you are going to take state dollars there has to be a degree of transparency and oversight for something like that.”

The bill would create an online comparison system for parents to evaluate private school performance against local public schools, among other provisions.

Great to be with union brothers and sisters as labor came together in support of Sherrod Brown in his campaign to return to the US Senate today. Having our next Congressman from the Ohio 7th District, Union Ironworker Brian Poindexter, and our next 5th District Cuyahoga County Council member Courtney Scheff there were two big added bonuses.

This followed a lively meeting last night at the Rocky River Democratic Club meeting, where 1st District County Council Member Pat Kelly and Rocky River Law Director Mike O’Shea joined a committed group of activists in talking about how we’re going to work together to bring needed change to our state this November. Just five months until Election Day. Lots of work to do!
