CENTRAL HOUSING COMMITTEE (CHC)
ALICE CAMPUS

STATEMENT ON THE ONGOING ELECTRICITY OUTAGE CRISIS

The Central Housing Committee (CHC), working in collaboration with the Student Representative Council (SRC), wishes to provide students with an update regarding the ongoing electricity outage affecting residences and various academic spaces across Alice Campus.

Unfortunately, the situation remains largely unchanged, and students continue to experience considerable inconvenience as a result of the persistent power disruptions. We fully acknowledge the frustration, discomfort, and challenges that this crisis has caused, particularly given its impact on students' living conditions, academic commitments, and overall well-being.

The CHC has been informed, through engagements with the relevant stakeholders, that the specialist technician who was expected to arrive on campus today did indeed arrive as scheduled. However, it has come to our attention that the materials and equipment required to carry out the necessary repair work were not available upon the specialist's arrival. Consequently, no significant progress could be made towards restoring stable electricity supply to the affected areas.

We view this development with serious concern and disappointment. The ongoing electricity crisis is not merely an operational challenge; it is a matter that directly affects student welfare, safety, and academic performance. The absence of the required materials despite prior arrangements reflects a lack of adequate coordination and urgency in responding to a matter of such significance to the student community.

According to the information provided to us, the specialist technician is expected to return tomorrow morning with the necessary materials to commence the required repair work. The CHC, together with the SRC, will continue to closely monitor developments and maintain engagement with the relevant university departments to ensure that the matter receives the immediate attention and intervention it warrants.

We remain committed to advocating for students and ensuring that their concerns are communicated effectively to university management. We will continue to provide updates as further information becomes available.

We thank students for their patience, resilience, and cooperation during this difficult period.

IMMEDIATE NOTICE‼️

From: Alice Campus Central Housing Committee (CHC)
To: Alice Campus Students
Subject: Update on Electricity Challenges
Date: 11 June 2026

Dear Students,

The Central Housing Committee (CHC) would like to provide an update regarding the ongoing electricity challenges affecting residences and various facilities on Alice Campus.

We acknowledge the frustration, inconvenience, and disruption that students continue to experience as a result of the current situation, particularly during the examination period. We have been engaging with the relevant stakeholders and technical teams to ensure that every effort is being made to restore electricity fully and permanently.

We have been informed that a specialist electrician was scheduled to attend to the fault yesterday. However, due to an exceptionally demanding workload and other urgent commitments, he was unable to travel to campus as initially planned. Confirmation of this development was only received this morning.

Furthermore, we have been advised that the specialist remains engaged with critical work in East London today and is therefore unavailable to attend to the matter immediately. The fault affecting the campus requires highly specialised expertise, and the electrician identified is currently the nearest qualified professional with the necessary skills and experience to diagnose and resolve the issue.

Following further engagements, we have received assurance that the specialist will be on campus tomorrow morning to conduct a thorough assessment and commence the required repairs.

In addition, the CHC working with SRC has formally requested the Maintenance Department to issue an official communication to students outlining the nature of the fault, the progress made thus far, and the planned interventions moving forward. We believe that students deserve transparent, accurate, and consistent updates regarding a matter that significantly affects their daily lives and academic responsibilities.

The CHC working closely with SRC remains in continuous communication with university management and the relevant technical teams to ensure that this issue receives the urgency and attention it deserves. We understand the impact these electricity disruptions are having on students’ studies, daily routines, and overall well-being, and we will continue to advocate for a swift and lasting solution.

We sincerely appreciate the patience, understanding, and cooperation demonstrated by students during this challenging period. Further updates will be communicated as soon as new information becomes available following the specialist’s assessment tomorrow.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: ELECTRICITY SUPPLY

Dear Students,

The Central Housing Committee (CHC) would like to inform you that electricity has been restored on campus. However, we have noticed that the power supply has not yet been fully restored, as some facilities and appliances are still not functioning properly. While certain outlets, particularly those used for charging devices and supporting academic activities, are working, other areas continue to experience challenges.

We have reported this matter to the relevant department, and we have been informed that it will be attended to tomorrow. The CHC will continue to follow up closely to ensure that the electricity supply is fully restored as soon as possible.

In the meantime, we encourage students to support one another during this period. If possible, please share food and assist fellow students where you can, so that no one goes to sleep hungry or attends examinations on an empty stomach.

We appreciate your patience, understanding, and spirit of solidarity as we work towards a complete resolution of this matter.

Regards,
Alice Campus Central Housing Committee(CHC)
