What Should I Include?
When you send in your ideas, keep them clear and specific. Tell us:
• Where – your town, ward, street, or area.
• What the need is – describe the problem or priority.
• Who is affected – a street, neighbourhood, organisation, or the wider ward.
• What you propose – suggest the improvement or project you’d like considered.

Examples include:
• Roads and stormwater upgrades
• Water and sanitation services
• Street lighting and electricity
• Waste management and illegal dumping
• Parks, housing, and community facilities
• Safety, youth, and development programmes
• Economic and employment initiatives

Be specific. Instead of saying “Our roads are bad,” you could write: “In Ward 1, Robertson the tar in Church Street is breaking up. It’s making driving difficult and dangerous for residents. Please assess the road for repairs or upgrading.”

The more detail you give, the easier it is for us to act.

What Happens Next?
All inputs received between 1 September, and 31 October 2026 will be recorded and considered in the IDP planning process. Not every project can be funded immediately — we must weigh resources, responsibilities, and feasibility. Some matters may also fall under the Western Cape Government or National Government, and we’ll engage them where needed.

The important step is making sure your community’s needs are heard and placed on the planning agenda.

IDP Input or Service Complaint?
Remember:
• An IDP input looks to the future — it’s about development priorities and long-term planning.
• A service complaint is about immediate issues like a burst pipe, power outage, or missed refuse collection. These should still be reported through the Municipality’s normal service request channels – 24 Hour Call Centre.

Participate Positively – Help Us Plan for Langeberg
Public participation works best when communities share constructive, realistic, and solution-focused ideas. Talk to your neighbours. Discuss priorities with your Ward Councillor and Ward Committee. Think about what your community needs now and what should be planned for tomorrow.

WESTERN CAPE GOVERNMENT OPENS APPLICATIONS FOR GROWTH OPPORTUNITY

The next phase of the Growth Opportunity Coalitions (GOC) Programme is now open, with eligible businesses and industry organisations invited to apply for funding. This Western Cape Government programme supports industry-led partnerships that drive economic growth and job creation by bringing together business, government, academia and investors to address industry challenges, unlock new market opportunities and attract investment into high-growth sectors.

Funding will be available to successful applicants over a three-year period from 2026 to 2029, subject to budget availability. Support may include:

- Industry coordination and coalition-building initiatives.
- Competitiveness and productivity enhancement projects.
- Market development and export promotion activities.
- Investment mobilisation and industry promotion.
- Enabling economic infrastructure projects that strengthen sector competitiveness.

- Food and Beverages

- Film, Television, Games Development and Animation

“The Growth Opportunity Coalitions Programme is about turning economic opportunities into real investment, real businesses and real jobs,” said Minister Dr Ivan Meyer. “By supporting industry-led partnerships, we are strengthening sectors with high growth potential, increasing exports, attracting investment and creating sustainable employment opportunities across the Western Cape.”

The programme forms part of the Western Cape Government's Growth for Jobs (G4J) Strategy and is designed to improve competitiveness, unlock investment opportunities and accelerate growth in strategic industries. Through coordinated action, supported coalitions will help businesses improve productivity, expand into new markets, strengthen export readiness and build resilience in an increasingly competitive global economy.

“As global markets evolve, regions that collaborate effectively will be best positioned to compete and succeed,” added Minister Meyer. “The Growth Opportunity Coalitions Programme provides a practical mechanism to accelerate investment, boost industrial competitiveness and support inclusive economic growth throughout the Western Cape.”

Proven Results
The programme has already demonstrated its impact through the successful implementation of Phase 1. Support provided to the South African Boat Builders Export Council (SABBEX) enabled participation in the International Multihull Show in France, creating valuable engagement opportunities with international industry partners and opening doors to the Hosted Buyer Programme at the Genoa International Boat Show. These engagements created direct pathways to international buyers, strengthened export prospects and expanded market opportunities for Western Cape marine manufacturers.

According to Vanessa Davidson, Executive Manager of SABBEX, the support demonstrated how targeted export promotion can unlock new international partnerships and create opportunities for long-term sector growth.

𝐋𝐀𝐍𝐆𝐄𝐁𝐄𝐑𝐆 𝐂𝐄𝐋𝐄𝐁𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐒 𝐉𝐎𝐇𝐍𝐍𝐘 𝐉𝐎𝐇𝐍𝐒𝐎𝐍’𝐒 𝟏𝟎𝟎𝐓𝐇 𝐁𝐈𝐑𝐓𝐇𝐃𝐀𝐘

Today, Wednesday, 21 October 2026, Langeberg Municipality celebrates the 100th birthday of Johannes Jacobus Johnson, affectionately known as Uncle Johnny Johnson and “Johnny Hugo” to many older Robertson residents. Born and raised in Robertson, Uncle Johnny has witnessed remarkable changes in the town and South Africa, making his story a valuable link to our shared past.

𝐀 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐑𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐬𝐨𝐧
Uncle Johnny grew up in a family of 12 children, with family roots stretching across Robertson and McGregor. He spent much of his working life in Robertson’s w**e industry, at a business associated with the Hugo family and later linked to KWV. This is how he became known to many as “Johnny Hugo”.

𝐀 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐭-𝐫𝐨𝐰 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲
One of his most memorable experiences took place on 22 February 1947, when he was 20 years old. He witnessed the British Royal Family’s visit to Robertson railway station during their tour of South Africa. King George VI, Queen Elizabeth and their daughters, Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret, arrived aboard the Royal Train, which stopped in Robertson for just 15 minutes. To mark Princess Elizabeth’s approaching 21st birthday, 21 palm trees were planted near the station. Fifteen of the original trees reportedly remain today!

Uncle Johnny has also lived through the Second World War, the apartheid era, Nelson Mandela’s release from prison and South Africa’s first democratic elections in 1994. His memories offer a unique glimpse into a century of change.

LANGEBERG MUNICIPALITY WORKS TOWARDS ROAD IMPROVEMENTS

Langeberg Municipality is aware of the condition of roads across its municipal area and continues to work on solutions to address the challenges.

A significant backlog in funding for road resurfacing and rehabilitation has contributed to the deterioration of roads over the years, especially during the rainy season. The much-needed rain not only makes it difficult to repair roads, but the wet conditions also contribute to further deterioration of the road surface.

As a short-term measure, the Municipality follows a Pothole Repair Programme, which includes pothole repairs and the cleaning of stormwater channels in the towns.

Between July and September 2026, municipal teams repaired 16,994 potholes across the five towns. Robertson recorded the highest number of repairs at 8,479, followed by Bonnievale with 3,768, Ashton with 3,452, Montagu with 1,126 and McGregor with 169.

Langeberg Municipality thanks residents for their patience as teams continue working across the five towns to address immediate road maintenance needs.

Addressing the underlying road damage
Although pothole repairs improve road safety and accessibility in the short term, some roads require more extensive rehabilitation. In several areas, particularly along older roads, deterioration extends beneath the surface into the underlying pavement structure. As a result, potholes may reappear even after repairs have been completed.

Preliminary assessments estimate that approximately R300 million will be required to rehabilitate the most severely affected roads across the municipal area. In certain locations, water and sewer infrastructure may also need to be upgraded or replaced before road reconstruction can take place, adding to the overall cost.

Investing in longer-term road improvements
Alongside ongoing pothole repairs, the Municipality is planning and implementing capital projects to improve road infrastructure within its available budget.

The 2026/27 adjustment budget, as at August 2026, includes approximately R31.51 million for Roads and Storm Water capital projects. This includes the following key projects:

- Ashton road upgrade: R17.35 million has been allocated to the project, which is currently in the construction phase. Expenditure of approximately R4.97 million was recorded in the September 2026 budget report.

- Robertson precinct upgrade: R8.70 million has been allocated to the project, which was at the procurement stage. The project scope is to be adjusted to align with the available funding.

- Rehabilitation and upgrading of existing tar roads: R4.18 million has been allocated towards the rehabilitation or upgrading of existing tar roads across the five towns.

These allocations include projects carried over from the previous financial year and form part of the broader capital programme. They are not exclusively dedicated to pothole repairs.

A three-year road rehabilitation and resurfacing tender is scheduled to be advertised on 23 October 2026. The Municipality will also consider whether unspent funds can be redirected towards road rehabilitation through the February 2027 adjustment budget, subject to funding availability and the necessary approvals.

While budget constraints and the extent of the damage present significant challenges, the Municipality will continue prioritising road maintenance and pursuing longer-term improvements as resources permit.

Reported potholes are added to the Municipality’s Pothole Repair Programme. Repairs are prioritised according to road conditions, traffic volumes, safety risks, weather and available resources.

Reports help the Municipality identify problem areas and prioritise repairs as it works towards safer, more reliable roads across the Langeberg.
