Following an investigation by the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) including direct engagement and discussion with the City of Cape Town, the MJC Burial Administration has established that the information currently being circulated regarding the alleged appropriation or use by the City of Cape Town of unmarked graves and vacant land at the Muizenberg Makbarah is false and without factual foundation.

The public is accordingly advised not to rely upon, distribute, republish or otherwise amplify this misinformation. The deliberate creation or dissemination of false information concerning cemeteries and the resting places of deceased persons is particularly irresponsible, as it has the potential to cause unnecessary distress, fear and confusion among affected families and the broader Muslim community.

The MJC therefore calls upon all persons responsible for creating or circulating such false material to cease and desist from doing so, and urges members of the public to verify information through recognised and authoritative channels before forwarding it.

The MJC will continue to engage with the relevant authorities and will communicate verified information to the community where necessary.

REGARDING MUNICIPAL CEMETERIES

The Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) continues its ongoing engagement with the City of Cape Town’s Cemetery Management to strengthen cooperation and improve cemetery services for the Muslim community.

Discussions focused on the allocation of additional burial space, improved cemetery systems and processes, and greater coordination between the MJC and the City to ensure that burial needs are managed efficiently, respectfully and sustainably.

The meeting was attended by Sheikh Riad Fataar, President of the Muslim Judicial Council; Faizal Sayed, Secretary of the MJC Burial Administration; Susan Brice, Head of Cemetery Management at the City of Cape Town; and Naema Dawood of the City of Cape Town.

MJC President, Sheikh Riad Fataar has met with Shaykh Mohamed al-Mishry.

Shaykh Mohamed al-Mishry is a distinguished Mauritanian scholar, a descendant of the family of the Prophet ﷺ, and the Director of Studies in his village of Maʿṭā Mūlānā, Mauritania. He has over 20 years of teaching experience in the traditional Mahdharah (المحظرة) system, renowned for memorisation, educational poetry (Manẓūmāt), direct transmission and structured study of classical texts.

He was brought to South Africa by the Shinqīṭ Foundation for a teaching tour focused not merely on lectures, but on conducting classes, teaching classical texts and sharing the Mauritanian methodology of memorisation and study raising the level of students while adding to the strong tradition of Islamic learning already present in South Africa.

During the tour, he has taught Rasm al-Qur’an, Shamā’il, Ājurrūmiyyah, Taʿlīm al-Mutaʿallim, Ṭalʿat al-Anwār, Ibn al-Jazarī, and completed the Tafsīr of Sūrah Yāsīn. Approximately 50 students memorised the Shamā’il poem.

In Cape Town, he is conducting a special Arabic only introductory reading of Al-Muwaṭṭaʾ of Imām Mālik for scholars and students of knowledge on Sunday, 16 August 2026, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Masjid-us-Salam, Athlone.
