JUNE SCREENSAVER CALENDAR

We are officially halfway through the year! Time to channel our inner chameleon. With eyes that can look backward at how far we’ve come and forward toward where we are going, June is the perfect moment for reflection and pivot. Just like the chameleon shifts its colors, let’s adapt, shed what isn't working, and move into the next half of the year with patience and precision.

Did you know that a dark-coloured Cape Dwarf chameleon might actually be a pregnant female keeping her babies warm? 🦎

Pregnant (or gravid) Cape Dwarf chameleons often turn much darker in colour — including their bellies — to absorb more heat from the sun. This extra warmth helps their developing embryos grow, especially during colder weather in the southwestern Cape.

But these remarkable little reptiles can also do the opposite. On extremely hot days, gravid females may turn a pale lime-green to reflect sunlight and cool themselves down.

Unlike many reptiles that lay eggs, Cape Dwarf chameleons are viviparous, meaning they give birth to live young.

Endemic to the southwestern Cape of South Africa, the Cape Dwarf chameleon is currently listed as Near Threatened, making the protection of local fynbos habitats more important than ever.

Sometimes the smallest creatures reveal the most extraordinary adaptations found within the Cape’s biodiversity. 🌿
