Independent Child Protection Unit - ICPU

Independent Child Protection Unit - ICPU We serve as a Watchdog over children's rights. We will use our independence and public powers to the fullest extent to bring this about.

We want to develop an evidence-based child protection best practices model to assist all sectors within the Child Protection System to effectively and efficiently safeguard children and young people in South Africa, in their care.

What a lovely, relaxing day at Flamingo Bay - Benoni ☀️
The perfect venue for the whole family — a safe space for the little ones and plenty to keep the older children entertained. It’s such a blessing to find a place where everyone can truly unwind and enjoy the day together.
We treated ourselves to a delicious café latte and divine pizza — absolutely worth it! ☕🍕
Highly recommended for a family day out! 💛

🌟 What a blessing this week began with 🌟
Our day started with an early-morning, fruitful meeting, followed by lunch at a child- and pet-friendly pub. The setting itself was beautiful – a driving range, two swimming pools, a sandpit, jungle gym, and a trampoline. A place made for families.
Across from us sat a dad with two preschoolers, a brother and sister. They were swimming, laughing, and playing together peacefully — no fighting, no screaming, just pure joy. Later, another dad with a preschool child joined them. From their conversation, I realised this was their first meeting.
Both dads were attentive to the children, while also taking time to talk and get to know each other. The way the children interacted with one another and with their dads spoke volumes. You could clearly see good discipline, respect, and manners being taught. These dads, both in their early 30's, were present, calm, and engaged.
In our line of work with the Independent Child Protection Unit (ICPU), we are so often exposed only to the broken side of families — the pain, the neglect, the trauma.
But today was a reminder.
✨ There is hope.
✨ There are good fathers.
✨ There are families doing it right.
Moments like this remind us why the work of the ICPU matters — to protect children, strengthen families, and help create more stories like this.
This moment filled our hearts and renewed our faith that positive change is happening, one family at a time. 💙👨‍👧‍👦

💙 If you believe in safe, healthy homes for children and want to be part of building hope, consider supporting or partnering with the ICPU. Together, we can protect what matters most — our children.

We offer our heartfelt condolences to the families of the 13 children who tragically lost their lives today. 🖤🖤✝️

⚠️ BRUTAL TRUTH: HOW PREDATORS GROOM CHILDREN

Every parent must read this. Predators don’t “get lucky.” They PLAN, TARGET and MANIPULATE with precision. Grooming is not an accident — it’s a strategy.

1. They target the vulnerable.
Predators scan for kids who look lonely, insecure or craving attention. They choose the easiest to manipulate, not the strongest to fight.

2. They force their way into your child’s world.
They become the “nice” teacher, coach, mentor, gamer, older teen, or online “friend.” They study your child’s weaknesses like a blueprint.

3. They flood the child with attention.
Validation. Praise. Gifts. Gaming credits. Special treatment.
It’s not kindness — it’s BAIT to create emotional dependence.

4. They introduce SECRETS.
A predator’s favourite word.
“Don’t tell your parents.”
“This is our little secret.”
The moment secrecy appears, grooming has already begun.

5. They break down boundaries, step by step.
A “harmless” compliment…
A joke about the child’s body…
An accidental touch…
Late-night messages…
Every small step is calculated to push the next.

6. They isolate the child from you.
“You’re mature for your age.”
“Your parents won’t understand.”
“I’m the only one who gets you.”
This is emotional kidnapping.

7. They weaponise shame and fear.
“You’ll get in trouble.”
“No one will believe you.”
“You made me do this.”
Shame is the handcuff that keeps children silent.

8. They hide in plain sight.
Schools. Daycares. Sports. Churches. Online games. Social media.
Many predators TRAIN themselves to pass interviews and gain access to children.

9. They never stop unless exposed.
Predators don’t “slip up.” They escalate. They repeat. They move to the next victim.

Parents — wake up.
If your child suddenly becomes secretive, withdrawn, anxious, overly attached to a new adult, or defensive of someone — pay attention.

Your awareness and education is the one thing predators cannot manipulate.

This situation has never been about the law, it is actually proof of the Department of Social Development's arrogance in covering up their own failures and corruption, which causes the system to be in disarray and ultimately results in the death of children.

Cases of newborns being dumped in open spaces, bins and rivers have been on the rise, a trend that child protection organisations say has worsened since the Department of Social Development began shutting down ‘baby saver’ centres. But the alternatives offered by the department — such as forma...
