LESEDI YOUTH DEVELOPMENT’S DREAM OF DELIVERING CONCERN LETTER TO THE PRESIDENCY ACHIEVED
It was a victory for both Lesedi Youth Development and campaigners against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) today, when the Office of the Presidency acknowledged receipt of a letter raising concerns regarding the safety of women, children, and communities throughout Blouberg Local Municipality and South Africa at large.
The campaign to raise awareness against the pandemic was launched last Friday by a six-member team under Lesedi Youth Development. They joined forces after witnessing the rising number of women falling victim to GBV. The initiative immediately received attention and full support from the Mayor, Cllr Maria Thamaga, who declared that through its Special Focus Unit, the municipality would ensure the team's mission was a success.
The team set off on foot last Friday from Senwabarwana, resting in Polokwane overnight before sleeping in Mokopane on Saturday. On Sunday, they walked through Mookgophong toward Hammanskraal, arriving in Pretoria on Tuesday, where they successfully handed over their letter of concerns without incident. Although scheduled to reach Kempton Park this evening, severe exhaustion prompted them to rest in Tembisa, with plans to complete the final leg to Kempton Park tomorrow.
According to the team, despite severe muscle soreness and other physical challenges, submitting the letter alone represents a significant milestone. They noted that along their route, many men came to understand that GBV is a scourge perpetuated by weakness. They urged boys and young men to step forward and speak out against the pandemic.
