🌿 Exciting Progress at the Batavia Street Fynbos Area! 🚧

I am delighted to share some exciting news with our community. The construction of the laterite pathway at the Batavia Street Fynbos Area, funded through the ward allocation, has officially begun!

This first phase of the project will see approximately 400 metres of pathway constructed at a width of 1.5 metres, covering the majority of the site. Once completed, only 190 metres will remain for Phase 2, bringing the total pathway length to 590 metres.

The contractor is already on site and has started with the earthworks, and the E1 kerb stones have been delivered, marking a significant step forward in improving accessibility and enjoyment of this beautiful natural area.

⚠️ Important Notice to Residents and Visitors There is currently heavy machinery operating on site, and we ask all members of the public to exercise caution when moving through or around the area. Safety remains a top priority while these works are underway.

We would also like to thank residents and neighbouring property owners for their patience and understanding. There will be some temporary inconvenience during construction, but the anticipated construction period is only 5 to 6 weeks. Judging by the excellent progress already being made, completion may even be sooner than expected.

A big thank you to the 15 volunteers who joined us for our Mandela Day clean-up last Saturday 🙌

Nelson Mandela once said: “It is in your hands to create a better world for all who live in it.”

And that’s exactly what we did. 🌱

We’re so grateful for the time, effort, and energy everyone brought. Together, we're making a real difference.

Good evening, everyone! 🌿

A beautiful sight to end the day! One of the Arum Lilies we planted during our June 2025 planting day is thriving and in bloom.

Moments like these remind us that every hour volunteered, every hole dug, and every plant carefully placed in the ground makes a difference. Nature rewards patience, and it’s wonderful to see our restoration efforts coming to life.

Here’s to many more blooms across the Batavia Street Fynbos Area! 🌱💚

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us for our recent Fynbos Planting Day at the Batavia Street Fynbos Area 💚.

Together, we planted 108 indigenous fynbos plants across 16 species, helping to restore and strengthen this valuable natural habitat. Every plant placed in the ground is an investment in local biodiversity and a healthier environment for future generations.

A special thank you to the City of Cape Town Biodiversity Branch for generously donating fynbos plants, and to Jacques Claassen for his financial contribution, which enabled us to purchase additional plants from the University of the Western Cape Nursery.

We are also proud to share that this planting event was officially registered as part of World Environment Day, making our collective effort part of a global movement to protect and restore nature.

To every volunteer who gave their time, energy, and enthusiasm—thank you. Your contribution is helping us rewild, protect, and grow the Batavia Street Fynbos Area 🙏.

A big thank you to all the volunteers who joined us for this weekends clean-up. From scouts to gardeners, geocachers and friends 🙌

We removed many small weeds that will save us a lot of work down the line, well done everyone! 🌱

There were also plenty of City Nature Challenge observations recorded 📱

We’re holding thumbs that the Scouts earn their badge!

Get ready for this week’s Fynbos Friday 🤩 We’re shining the spotlight on the Cape dune mole-rat.

This underground specialist is busy right beneath your feet, leaving behind the sandy molehills you see scattered across the Batavia Street Fynbos Area.

These solitary diggers spend almost their entire lives below ground, moving up to 500 kg of sand each month as they build their extensive tunnel systems.

Keep an eye out for those fresh mounds and hidden pathways as you explore.
