Fire at sea is the ultimate nightmare. 🔥
There is no running to call the fire department. You are the fire department.
While the majority of shipboard fires start in the machinery or engine room, our initial instinct is to rip open the doors. However, this can cause a serious problem known as the oxygen trap.
If a fire starts in an enclosed room, it will quickly burn up all the oxygen, causing the flames to smoulder. The moment you open a door, there will be a major rush of fresh air.
This instant shot of oxygen can trigger an explosive flare-up that engulfs the companionway and cuts off your escape route.
