Why do some people take the stairs while others take the elevator? Why do some early morning runners run in the rain while others see it as an excuse to lie in?

In the previous Cafè Talk we looked at strong mindsets. How do you become the person with the strong mindset and how does it prepare you for unexpected setbacks?

Our next Café Talk will be on the best way to recover after a setback; loss, betrayal, rejection, whether it be from a spouse or friends, or just in every day sirltuations where your expectations were not met, or you were left with a huge degree of disappointment.

Recovery takes time and in all cases it is accompanied by many different emotions; anger, pain, guilt, regret, emptiness, and more. There is a way to not only get through this easier but to walk out even better on the other side.

If you relate to any of this, the next Cafè Talk might just be for you. Watch this space for info on the next event on 27 May. Same time, same place. 🙌🏼🙌🏼

One of the greatest or most rewarding feelings is when a decision that you have made a long time ago, one that was hard to make, one that looked like it was the wrong decision at the time, finally, after months or even years start working out for you.

Sometimes we are faced with difficult decisions. Sometimes it is just pure impatience that prevents us from making a decision unless we can see the benefits immediately. Sometimes we never see the benefits, might even forget about it but then one day it starts feeling like things are falling in place again. That career you hated, the one you left hoping to find another one that gives your more freedom. You might suffer financially for along time but one day you might realize that you are actually happier now doing what you love albeit with less money. That friendship or relationship where you were not appreciated. Walking away at the time might have felt like the worst decision ever. Loneliness might have hit you for a while but one day you will look around you and be surrounded only by real people now.

Only when this happens you will realize that you did the right thing back then. Only now looking back you will see that the old job and old friends remained the same but you have changed, you have grown.

We don't grow if we don't make difficult decisions. If we always take the easy way out we end up with the cheap versions of everything life offers us; a dead beat job, fake friends, uncomfortable comforts. Take that difficult decision and let go... at some point it will pay off. Just be patient...

Niccolò Machiavelli was a controversial figure because he separated politics from ethics and suggested the ends justify the means. Almost the same as "for the greater good". Although I cannot really associate myself with all his ideas, I do find a lot of value in his thoughts on strong mindsets. He emphasized that powerful minds stay unruffled by anything thrown at them. One of his best known pieces of adviced used by almost all world leaders is to never defend yourself, especially not when you know the truth. It comes with a warning though. Machiavelli said that if you do not defend yourself your accuser will revert to even meaner ways to prove their accusation and you do not want to drop to their level. You keep quiet and wait for the truth to reveal itself with time.

Other great thinkers who also gave valuable advice on strong minsets were people like Friederich Nietszche and Carl Jung. Nietzsche's "Will to Power" philosophy was criticised during his time but today is studied in depth in a world where we have become weak in defending ourselves against the system and its propaganda. Jung's theory on facing our shadow is also used in creating a stronger mindset. Jung said that if we do not know what our weaknesses are we cannot work on them. He called the process 'Individuation", a process to act in accordance with one's true self.

Having a strong mindset is liberating. The ability to not be triggered by people and events not only prevents emotional depletion, but it gives you more time to focus on your own happiness. A strong mindset solves almost every single "problem" we think we have.

I’m curating the next Café Talk evening — an intimate gathering where people share powerful personal stories, unusual life lessons, and psychological insights.

This isn’t a business pitch event. It’s about human experience.

Topics could include things like:
- A personal turning point that changed how you see life
- Lessons from failure or adversity
- A surprising insight about human nature
- Interesting hobbies or practices
- A life experiment that changed you
- Keeping it real and interesting

Each speaker gets 40 minutes in a relaxed café setting, followed by a quick Q&A and then something to eat and drink.

I’m selecting 1 or 2 speakers for the next event. If you have a story or perspective that makes people think, you’re welcome to send me a message with a short description.

No politics, religion, or activism — just thoughtful human stories.

This is relaxed sharing, not public speaking. We all have stories and our stories matter. Let's share them.

Date: TBA (late March)
Venue: Blessings Coffee & Creative

Please share this or Whatsapp me if you have a story to share.

Wow, it's been a while. So much has happened since our first very successful Cafe Talk. Too much to go into detail here. It was never cancelled though, just put on ice. Anyway, the ice has melted and it is time to get this show on the road again.

I have sourced a new venue in Melkbosstrand to host future Cafe Talks. I have had enquiries on when the next one will be. I think the time is right but I need speakers. I do not want to keep telling my own story, I will just open every event with some thoughts.

I am looking for your stories, for something unusual, something authentic and inspiring, maybe even eccentric or controversial. Personal experiences, personal beliefs, not on religion or politics pls, we see and hear enough of that.

If you want to do a short 45 min presentation or know of someone who would be keen to share interesting stories and experiences, pls share this with them or refer me to them. Let's keep the topics open minded, all ages, hip and informative.

Contact me on Whatsapp if you are interested or have questions.

Our first event was a huge success.....

Oh my word! What an amazing evening. Our first Cafe Talk () event was a huge success. Selling all our tickets on a Thu night is hopefully a sign for great things to come. There are people out there who want to care and share, people with stories, people with pain and people with victories. Thanks to everyone who attended, thanks to everyone who opened up their hearts, the ones who listened, and the ones who supported. Thanks for the amazing feedback I have received; everyone agreed that the chocolate brownies were the best. Btw you can contact Tina () for all your festive season cake requirements. Thank you Tina for the catering. Thanks Karen for the venue (), laughter and great service. And Adam who helped behind the bar. Also thanks to the guys from who set up the screen after a long struggle to figure out that they already had a cable installed (they are surfers after all 😉🤙🏼). Thanks to for her talk on mindfullness and for everyone who managed to sit still during mine. I've told my story too, what a liberating feeling to clean out your closet and tell it like it is.

To the ones who missed out last night I already have my next topic lined up for my text talk. If you know ANY stay-at-home dad who thought being a house-person (haha) was easy - and learned the hard way - who would like to share their story, please direct them to me. Also, anyone else who wants to share stories and contribute to this platform, please let me know. We have so much to share.

See you at the next one and let's keep talking!
