Baba Steven Malondera Writes
Amalawi anzanga campaign is behind us and we have a new government under H.E Prof. Aurthur Peter Muntharika who is also the President of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
DPP was extremely clever during campaign. You may recall that when DPP was campaigning, it clearly told innocent Malawians exactly what they wanted to hear — that once back in power, fertilizer prices would drop to K50,000. The party blamed Dr. Chakwera's administration for the high fertilizer prices, calling it a “leadership failure.” And when Dr. Chakwera’s government explained that global market shocks were responsible for the surge — rising shipping costs, fuel hikes, and disrupted supply chains — DPP dismissed it all as lies and excuses.
But now reality has come knocking ndipotu knocking yake makosa eishiiiii😭😭😭it’s not knocking gently. According to the Fertilizer Association of Malawi, which doesn't belong to the mighty Malawi Congress Party, the global shipping costs have soared from $366 to $515 per metric tonne, pushing fertilizer prices even higher. This is exactly what Dr. Chakwera’s administration said was happening — a ripple effect of international crises that no single government can control. So, what will DPP tell Malawians now? That the global market suddenly started working against them after they made their campaign promises? Mwina akalumbila timva, but last time I checked they did that at Kamuzu Stadium.
This moment exposes a deeper truth: DPP rose on a wave of populism, not realism. They sold a dream and innocent citizens of this great nation went on to dream in colors. Yooo akati cheap fertilizer, instant prosperity, and quick fixes 🤣🤣🤣 komatu without a credible plan or an honest assessment of global realities. Ku mtambo mtambo uko mumve ndithu kuti populism works in rallies, but it collapses in the real economy. The same global market forces that Dr. Chakwera faced are still here, and no amount of political rhetoric can wish them awa
