Young cheetahs playing freely β€” wild, curious, and completely unforgettable.

Moments like these are a reminder of why protecting wild spaces matters.

At Kukama, students experience the beauty, behaviour, and privilege of seeing some endangered species up and close.

On 5 June our students took a simple decoration and gave it new life for World Environment Day.

The Spekboompies used on the tables were planted again β€” a small act inspired by nature, for the climate and our future.

Spekboom is known for its COβ‚‚ intake, fire resistance, and value as a food source for animals like elephants.

At Kukama, conservation is not only something we learn about. It is something we practice.

🚨 FIRST AID SCENARIO TRAINING 🚨

This training scenario was intense, realistic, and a big reminder of why first aid skills matter in the bush.

A patient was doing maintenance around the lodge without following the correct workplace procedures or wearing the necessary PPE. The result was serious β€” a traumatic leg amputation and a severe head injury.

Now add to that:
πŸ“ Deep in the bush
πŸ“ No hospital nearby
πŸ“ Limited resources
πŸ“ A high-pressure environment

As a field guide, you may be the very first person on scene. In moments like these, staying calm, thinking clearly, and working together can make all the difference.

Our students had to assess the scene, manage the injuries, use what they had available, and work as a team under pressure.

A big thank you to Care 4 You Ambulance Service for providing the training and guiding our students through such an important learning experience.

Because in the bush, help is not always around the corner β€” sometimes YOU are the help.

Not everyone is meant for an office.

Some are meant for sunrises in the bush.
Some are meant to track wildlife.
Some are meant to protect wild places.

If that's you, your journey starts here.

Behind the scenes of our Kukama potjiekos competition.

Before the serious training began, our June intake jumped straight into a potjiekos competition β€” teams were made, fires were lit, and the bushveld quickly filled with the smell of good food.

A little competition, a lot of teamwork, and the perfect sunset to end it off.

STUDY WITH PURPOSE

Our first NQF2 Nature Site Guide group, the people who turned vision into reality on the ground.

They did not arrive at a finished reserve, they helped build it.

Infrastructure was still developing. Water systems were still being installed. Monitoring had just
begun.

Training and restoration started together with this intake. They were not only students. They were part of the foundation.

The journey continues with every group that follows, each intake contributing to the next stage of
restoration.

Built through education, invested into land.

Every student helps move this reserve forward.

Sustainability isn’t just something we teach β€” it’s something we live. 🌱

From harvesting homegrown vegetables and baking rusks for our students, to composting food leftovers and caring for our worm farm, every small action helps nurture a more sustainable future.

A proud moment for our June intake β€” standing together in their Kukama uniforms, ready for the journey ahead.

From the first day, the uniform becomes more than something you wear. It represents commitment, growth, teamwork, and the responsibility of stepping into the wild with purpose.

Thank you to Johnsons Workwear for helping our students look the part as they begin this exciting chapter.

Arrival day at Kukama started with teamwork, laughter, and the smell of potjiekos on the fire.

Our June intake was divided into teams and challenged to work together through different tasks, ending with a proper potjiekos competition. It was the perfect way to break the ice, build connection, and remind everyone that field guide training is not only about knowledge β€” it is also about people, communication, and trust.

With the sun setting in the background, great food on the fire, and new friendships already forming, it was a beautiful start to the journey ahead.
