STATEMENT OF THE AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS IN THEMBELIHLE SUB-REGION

20 December 2021

The African National Congress in Thembelihle sub-region has observed with disdain the recent events that took place at Thembelihle Local Municipality since the inauguration of the new council in November 2021. There were clear displays of abuse of power and the victimisation and intimidation of municipal officials by elected councillors of the municipality. These acts were fast plunging the municipality in a state of chaos and lawlessness with no regard for the constituencies that elected the council into power.

Today Thembelihle Local Municipality Council convened a special council meeting where a motion to remove Cllr. Leonard Makenna as a member of EXCO from the EFF was tabled successfully. This therefore means Cllr. Makenna cannot serve as a Mayor if he is not a member of the Executive Committee. Subsequently, the majority of councillors in attendance then elected Cllr. Brenda Mpamba as the new mayor of Thembelihle Local Municipality.

The ANC in Thembelihle sub-region welcomes the decision by the Council and its resolve to maintain order and stability in the municipality. We have confidence that the new mayor will work with all parties in council to deliver quality services accessible to all people of Thembelihle.

We wish you a merry Christmas and a prosperous new year. Please stay safe and adhere to all regulations aimed at curbing the spread of COVID-19.

Issued by the African National Congress in Thembelihle sub-region.
