Empowering Small Businesses Through Enterprise Development

The Harry Gwala Development Agency proudly hosted the Small Enterprise (MSMEs) Development Programme – Business Equipment Handover at Ixopo on 30 June 2026, reaffirming its commitment to supporting local entrepreneurs and strengthening the district's economy.

His Worship, the Mayor, Cllr Nxumalo, officially handed over business equipment to 17 MSMEs, including businesses owned by women, persons with disabilities, and young entrepreneurs from across the Harry Gwala District.

Among the equipment handed over were cellphone repair toolkits provided to unemployed young people who successfully completed cellphone repair training in the previous year. The equipment will enable them to establish and operate their own cellphone repair businesses, creating sustainable livelihoods and employment opportunities.

The event was graced by the Chairperson of the HGDA Board, Mr Zweli Baleni, the Chairperson of the Ixopo Chamber of Business, Mr Mphathi Madondo, together with entrepreneurs, business stakeholders, government representatives and community members who gathered to celebrate this important milestone.

The business equipment handover demonstrates the Agency's unwavering commitment to advancing small businesses by improving their productive capacity, promoting inclusive economic growth, creating sustainable employment opportunities and enhancing business sustainability.

In their addresses, the speakers encouraged beneficiaries to make responsible use of the equipment and emphasised that business success is built on commitment, discipline, sound business principles, hard work, accountability and perseverance. They urged entrepreneurs to uphold high ethical standards, remain focused on their goals and utilise the support provided to grow resilient and sustainable enterprises.

The Harry Gwala Development Agency believes that investing in MSMEs is an investment in the future of the Harry Gwala District. By empowering local businesses with the tools and resources they need to succeed, the Agency continues to drive inclusive economic development, stimulate job creation and improve livelihoods across the district.

FINANCIAL LITERACY EMPOWERMENT PROGRAMME STRENGTHENS ECONOMIC RESILIENCE IN HARRY GWALA DISTRICT

The Harry Gwala Development Agency, in collaboration with strategic partners under the Eastern Seaboard Development initiative, hosted a Financial Literacy Training Programme on 27 May 2026 at the Peace Initiative Hall in Ixopo. The session formed part of ongoing efforts to strengthen economic awareness, improve household financial management, and promote long-term financial resilience within communities across the Harry Gwala District.

Facilitated by Old Mutual, the programme focused on empowering participants with practical skills to make informed financial decisions in their daily lives. The training created an interactive platform where community members, officials, and development stakeholders engaged on key financial topics affecting households and small enterprises. The emphasis was placed on building a strong foundation of financial discipline as a pathway to improved economic stability.

Key discussions explored the importance of responsible financial behaviour, effective budgeting practices, debt management, and the value of saving and investing. Participants were also exposed to critical aspects of financial planning, including understanding insurance, preparing for future financial needs, and making informed decisions when considering major purchases. These insights were shared in a way that encouraged reflection on personal financial habits and encouraged practical application beyond the training environment.

The programme further highlighted the broader social and economic realities that influence household financial wellbeing, including the need for improved financial communication within families and communities. Participants were encouraged to adopt structured financial planning approaches that support both immediate needs and long-term goals, while also reducing vulnerability to financial distress.

The initiative was supported by key institutional partners including KZN COGTA and MISA, reflecting a coordinated effort to advance community development and financial empowerment. The Harry Gwala Development Agency remains committed to driving programmes that enhance financial literacy, strengthen local economic participation, and support sustainable development outcomes across the district.
