Activate Change Drivers A network of young leaders equipped to drive change for the public good across South Africa. The Activate! By inspiring action, Activators!

programme supports young leaders to hone their abilities and to step up to tackle some of toughest problems facing their communities around the country. are catalysts for positive change and aspire to:

- Spark public innovation
- Drive innovation at local and national levels
- Connect with each other to achieve more through their combined efforts
- Grow a dynamic network of leaders and points of

influence across communities around South Africa
- Develop a deep sense of community and a strong desire to solve social problems
- Build teams with complementary skills to tackle big scary challenges
- Take action and make things happen

The Activate! programme is combination of intensive residential training, ongoing action-based learning, and commitment to full participation in a national network of young leaders. Programme has been broken into three modules. The first two of these are 9 days, with the third module taking place over 7 days. Towards the end of the year all participants from across the country will come together at a National Innovation Summit to showcase their big ideas, and concrete actions. Overall, the programme covers 27 residential days, with additional home tasks.

⚠️ While the world prepares to wrap up Monday, our day has just begun. This week, our training of trainers is taking place in Gauteng, where our amplifiers from across all our provinces are in attendance. They are here to reflect on the rollout of the ACD In Community Programme module 1, pause and look forward to the second rollout of the ACD In Community Programme module 2. Ultimately, the training aims to develop our amplifiers into competent facilitators who can foster an inclusive, impactful and sustainable training.

This is Make Your Mark Monday; we're still celebrating women on the move. Making their mark in KZN is our Amplifier Ntwenhle Majozi, together with KZN Civic Champion Melusi Mahlaba, who convened a civic education dialogue with young people in Pietermaritzburg, including prospective 2026 Activators.

The session focused on the importance of active citizenship, meaningful youth participation in community development, and constructive engagement with community leadership through appropriate democratic channels.

Sunday reads are not complete without our blogpost go [READ].

Did you know that in the Northern Cape, we have an activator who is a taxi owner? Behind every taxi hoot and inconvenience on the road lies a representation of what it means to be South African.

It was a R30 000 police tender that became her seed capital, which contributed to her purchasing her first taxi. Getting there was not easy; she has no intention of leaving.

From her struggles with the loss of her mum to failing matric and becoming a hairdresser to make ends meet. After years of resilience, her strides have made her a woman who contributes to the transport economy.

There's beauty in business: In any township you enter, you will find the market place filled with entrepreneurs who are women. From street vendors to local food retailers, spaza shop owners and hairdressers, with many of these businesses driven by women. One of them is Siyasanga Hohana, a somatologist and founder of Hohana Style Up Studio S.A in Mdantsane, an urban township near KuGompo City, Eastern Cape. Read about HER story, here.

SWIPE: South Africa faces a major early childhood reading crisis, in which about 81% of Grade 4 learners cannot read for meaning in any language. Determined to address this is 2019 Activator Italiah Mthethwa, the founder and coordinator of a reading club in her community of Tafelkop. This is where she promotes literacy, fosters a culture of reading, and supports learners in developing critical-thinking and lifelong-learning skills. Her interest in literacy began after she worked as a reading champion monitor for Activate Change Drivers in partnership with the Department of Education. Since then, she has not looked back. Did somebody say hashtag ? We can't help but reflect on the powerful screening hosted on the 19th of June by Activator and Civic Champion Pretima Smith hosted in Middelburg, Mpumalanga, with support from Sunshine Cinema. The event brought young people together to explore important issues around civic participation, democracy, identity, and having a voice in their communities. The film sparked meaningful conversations, with participants reflecting on how the ropes used in the film symbolised the challenges they face daily: unemployment, poverty, limited opportunities, family pressures, and social expectations that can leave young people feeling trapped and unheard. With skilled facilitation support from Lebohang Zimba and Nonhlanhla Dube, participants connected the film’s themes to their own experiences, opening up honest discussions about overcoming barriers, exercising agency, and becoming active citizens.
