STORY TIME – A NEW RESIDENT FOR RESTHILL
She reached out to us via a Google search and used the channel on our website to file a formal request. Moments after the information reached her, we received the call at Resthill and arranged for a sightseeing visit.
Within minutes of being at the table with the Resthill personnel, she exhibited all the signs of total burnout. She is the sole caregiver for her loved one, and the rest of the family does not understand her plight. “You work from home, you have all day to look after him.” That was the general attitude of the other siblings, but what they forgot was that she WORKED from home. She was the sole breadwinner; she had her own family and children to look after. She had to put in the work as well. They did not understand the effects of the disease. They had no idea what dementia entails, and she felt that she was alone in the world, and nobody cared.
Her biggest question was how she could convince the rest of the family that she could no longer attend to the daily requirements of their loved one. She needs to have him placed with us, here at Resthill, because she is convinced that he would love it here.
Around the table, plans were made, and sound advice as to how to convince the family was given and discussed. Slowly, you could see relief in her face. There is a light in the tunnel. When she eventually left here, she was smiling.
Three days later, she called to ask when she could bring her loved one; the family has agreed and is content that their loved one should come to Resthill. It carried their full approval.
Families can sometimes be very complex, and it will take expert advice to convince them to do the right thing. At Resthill, we have several experts in different fields of dementia and knowledge of what people really need. The Resthill facility also provides four different homes for different stages of the disease. The country-style living with farm animals and residents’ own pets makes it an attractive option. Once your loved one is a resident at Resthill, we will never tell you that we can no longer look after him. Resthill is in for the long run and will support their Residents and their families to the very end.
