The ANC will follow the path of the Chinese Communist Party in building an ethical organisation that deals with corruption, says treasurer-general Paul Mash*tle. File photo.

The ANC will follow in the steps of the Chinese Communist Party (CPC) in building an ethical organisation that deals with corruption without fear or favour.

That's according to the man behind party finances Paul Mashatile, as the ANC seeks to root out corruption and regain the trust of its members.

The treasurer-general expressed these sentiments on Monday during a dialogue exploring bilateral relations between SA and China — as the CPC marks its centenary.

“We share deep bones of friendship and solidarity with the people of China, although our countries are continents apart, although we have very different histories, there is much that we have in common, and there is much that we can learn from each other.

“As the ANC, we place a high premium on the party-to-party relations we have developed over many years with the Communist Party of China. Going forward it is our intention to strengthen these relations, assured in the knowledge that ours is a shared destiny,” said Mashatile.

He said the ruling party had always admired the Chinese path of development, which has seen the country emerging from imperialism and colonialism to being the second largest economy in the world.

“We are inspired and will continue to draw lessons on how the country, led by the party, has succeeded in lifting nearly 100 million out of poverty and has accomplished the task of eradicating absolute poverty.

“As we renew our movement, we will emulate the example of the Communist Party of China in putting people first and always ensuring that their interest remains our primary occupation,” he said.

In not so many words, Mashatile admitted that the ANC had been plagued by challenges. However, he was confident it would conquer.

“Like the Communist Party of China,

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ANC MOURNS THE PASSING OF VETERAN JOURNALIST AND BROADCASTER, KARIMA BROWN

The African National Congress (ANC) has learnt with shock and sadness about the passing of veteran journalist and seasoned broadcaster, Karima Brown, who reportedly succumbed to COVID-19 complications. Journalism has lost one of its most dedicated and courageous servants.

We join millions of South Africans who say that the passing of Karima Brown is a huge loss to the media world. As the ANC, we will remember her for her selfless commitment to the liberation of the people of South Africa. Karima Brown grew up in the ANC family and dedicated most of her life to the struggle for a just, democratic and non-racial South Africa. She was part of the activists who worked for the launch of the South African Youth Congress (SAYCO) as well as the building of the Congress of South African Students (COSAS). Her father, a veteran of the ANC, Achmat Semaar, sadly passed on last year in April at the age of 72.

As a journalist, she was fiercely independent, courageous, fearless and uncompromising in her pursuit of the truth.

A courageous journalist and political analyst, she had a strong footprint in the media industry. She worked at Independent newspapers, Business Day, SABC, 702 and eNCA. At the time of her passing, she was the host of “The Fix”, on eNCA. Her voice and contribution in the public discourse will be sorely missed.

Karima was an inspiration to aspiring journalists and mentored many young journalists.

The ANC conveys its heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, the entire media fraternity and the people of South Africa as a whole. We hope they will find solace in the knowledge that the entire nation shares in their grief. We wish them strength and fortitude in this difficult time.
