*Alert* ‼️

UMP SRC would like to notify students about the trending fake message that is currently being circulated regarding food parcels.

We believe that this behaviour, which may also involve political motives, should be taken into serious consideration by university management, as the situation is now getting out of hand, misleading students, and playing with their emotions.

*The SRC will notify students through their social media platforms once we have procured them.*

The UMP SRC is proud to announce that we have successfully secured sanitary towels through the generous support and donations from various stakeholders. This initiative was driven by our commitment to respond to the needs of students, particularly those who may find themselves without access to essential sanitary products in times of emergency.

We remain dedicated to ensuring the dignity, well-being, and support of every student. Together, we can continue to build a caring and responsive campus community where no student is left behind.

*SRC STATEMENT ON SUSPENSION OF ACCOMMODATIONS SERVICES BY MASA*

Greetings to all students of the University of Mpumalanga.

The Student Representative Council (SRC) would like to inform all students that some students are currently unable to come to campus. This is because certain services at their residences are no longer being provided. These services include transport, electricity, and other important services.

This situation follows the release of a communiqué by the Mpumalanga Association of Student Accommodation (MASA), which indicated that these services would not be provided under the current circumstances.

As a result, many students are now affected, especially academically. Some students are unable to come to campus to write their scheduled tests and attend other academic activities.

The SRC understands how serious this situation is and has therefore taken a position to defend and support affected students. The SRC is currently engaging with lecturers to request that they consider postponing the tests or allowing a second opportunity for students who are unable to come to campus to write their tests.

The aim of the SRC is to ensure that no student is academically disadvantaged because of circumstances beyond their control.

The SRC will continue to engage with the relevant stakeholders to find a fair solution for all affected students.

*ATTENTION* ‼️

After receiving complaints from students that certain landlords are demanding deposit payments from NSFAS-funded students, the SRC formally raised this matter with National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).

We wish to inform all affected students that this practice is not permitted, and NSFAS has confirmed its opposition to such actions. Appropriate steps will be taken against any landlord found to be engaging in this conduct.

*We therefore call upon all students who have paid deposits to their landlords to submit the name of the residence and the landlord’s contact details to the following address:*

*In case you missed it*‼️

The UMP SRC President raised several concerns with NSFAS officials regarding the challenges students experienced when submitting their appeals. He highlighted that many students encountered difficulties during the appeals process, particularly due to a lack of clear guidance on the required supporting documents.

He further emphasized that a number of students were unfairly rejected because NSFAS did not provide precise and comprehensive instructions on what documents needed to be uploaded. As a result, students often submitted incorrect or incomplete documentation, which negatively affected the outcome of their appeals. The SRC President therefore urged NSFAS to provide clearer direction and improved communication to ensure that students are properly guided throughout the appeals process.

*UMP SRC UPDATE ON REGISTRATIONS*

As your SRC, we would like to take this opportunity to update you on important matters concerning registrations, financial support, and NSFAS appeals.

1. Financial Support

Throughout registrations, the SRC had notice students who are struggling to register through financial constraints, in the absence of financial backing , as the SRC did not receive any financial support e.g from Motsepe Foundation Donation, the SRC had to utilize university formal processes to assist students, for the course of this week, the SRC utilized FCC to assist students who are in financial need which some students during the week registered through FCC initiative, however while examining it, through its criteria and nature we note that it didn’t address the core needs of students who are in need. As a results, we are currently reaching out and engaging with the VC office to extend financial support to all deserving students who are in need to financial support to be able to register. We look forward to having new directive early this coming week to ensure all students register.

2. NSFAS appeals

Regarding NSFAS appeals rejected due to errors in credit calculations by university officials, the SRC has engaged with NSFAS officials and the University's Financial Aid Office. We have secured a commitment from the University Registrar's office to request NSFAS to review these appeals. As a result, some affected students are reporting positive changes in their statuses. For those whose statuses are still pending, we advise patience; in the meantime, if you encounter any issues, be it eviction or others, kindly speak to the SRC. NSFAS has committed to responding to appeals by 20 February. Due to the delayed processing, NSFAS has requested universities to extend the registration period in accommodation of affected students.
Considering that affected students are being left behind as classes have commenced, we are advising that they start to attend classes while their registration process is being facilitated.

We also wish to address the misinformation being spread by certain individuals, which is trying to undermine the efforts of the SRC. These claims, which suggest that the SRC is not working effectively, are unfounded and appear to be motivated by a desire for attention. We urge students to be careful and not be swayed by such negativity. Instead, we invite students who are experiencing difficulties to contact us directly for support or to follow our official social media channels for updates. The SRC remains committed to working hard on behalf of the student body.

3. NSFAS Study loan

Following an engagement between our SRC President and officials from NSFAS during the recent training session, concerns were formally raised regarding the lack of support for students approved under the NSFAS loan scheme.
We are pleased to announce that the engagement yielded positive results. Students who have been approved for the 2026 NSFAS Loan are now permitted to proceed with registration. However, students approved under the 2024 and 2025 NSFAS loan cycles are still awaiting assistance, and this matter remains under follow-up to ensure they are also attended to without further delay.

Kind Regards
SRC Secretary General
