The Department of Land Reform and Rural Development convened the second quarter National Spatial Planning and Land Use Management Forum in Gauteng today, with the South African Council for Planners participating as a key stakeholder. SACPLAN Deputy Chairperson Ms Nosipho Hlatshwayo introduced the new Council and shared key highlights from its programme of action for the term ahead, including milestones achieved since the start of the term. SACPLAN Operations Manager Mr Bongumusa Ndwandwe, also presented on strengthening professional practice through continuous professional development and advocacy.

The Council Registrar, Ms Nontsundu Ndonga focused on delivering a detailed report on the First State of the Planning Profession Report, outlining the progress made thus far in the transformation of the planning profession. She emphasised the importance of transformation within the profession, particularly in recognising and celebrating significant calendar months such as Heritage Month. In this regard, she asked: are people able to practice their cultural practices within modern urban environments? She encouraged planners to reflect on this in fulfilling their role.

As Council, the engagement was very interactive, and we are welcoming the inputs made by planners directly on the programme of action ahead, as well as areas for improvement. We look forward to further engagement with planners through this forum.

The South African Council for Planners (SACPLAN) and the City of Johannesburg jointly hosted a development planning workshop on 1 September 2026 for the City's town planners. The workshop formed part of ongoing efforts to advance the professionalisation of both City's and it’s planning function with a particular focus on registration.

In his welcome address, the City's Deputy Director: Land Use Management, Mr Julius Sello, emphasised that registration goes beyond a compliance requirement it plays a central role in transforming and protecting the profession. He noted that, as the densest city in South Africa and the recipient of the highest volume of development planning applications nationally, it is critical that all planners working within the City are registered.

The workshop equipped planners with a clear understanding of why registration matters and the practical steps involved in the registration process, reinforcing the shared commitment of SACPLAN and the City of Johannesburg to a fully professionalised planning sector.

As we close Women’s Month, we celebrate Ms Nosipho Hlatshwayo, a Professional Planner, accomplished urban development strategist and Chief Executive Officer of the South African Cities Network (SACN), whose leadership continues to contribute to the advancement of South Africa’s urban agenda.

With expertise spanning planning, city strategies, organisational transformation, and monitoring and evaluation, Ms Hlatshwayo brings valuable experience across both the public and private sector.

SACPLAN at the North-West SAPI Regional Event | 21 August 2026

SACPLAN was honoured to participate in the North-West SAPI Regional Event held on 21 August 2026, bringing together stakeholders, academics, SAPI officials, the SAPI North-West team and students for meaningful engagement on the future of planning.

SACPLAN Registrar, Ms Ndonga, delivered a keynote address titled “From Margins to Makers: Women and Youth as Catalysts for Rural Transformation in a Digital Age.” She emphasised the importance of using technology intentionally and responsibly to support people-centred development, while highlighting the vital role of women and youth as resilient, creative, resourceful and courageous drivers of change.

Drawing on SACPLAN’s First State of the Planning Profession Report (SPPR), Ms Ndonga also highlighted the need for continued transformation within the profession, including stronger advocacy for the value of planning, improved planning education and processes, greater collaboration, and strengthened municipal planning capacity.

SACPLAN extends its appreciation to SAPI North-West, the academic community, students and all stakeholders who contributed to a valuable platform for dialogue, learning and engagement on the future of the planning profession.

As the founder and Managing Director of PHEMO Town Planning and Property Development Consultancy, a SACPLAN Council Member and Chairperson of the Registration Committee, Ms Mahopo brings valuable expertise across spatial planning, land use management, property development, planning law and urban development. She also contributes to municipal planning through her service on the Ekurhuleni, Madibeng and Mopani District Municipality Municipal Planning Tribunals.
