It is time that the people of Mitchells Plain wake up and smell the coffee...STATEMENT BY CLLR. ELTON-ENRIQUE JANSEN re. *PROPOSED RELOCATION OF PEOPLE FROM CENTRAL LINE TO WELTEVREDEN WEDGE, PHILIPPI | 26 AUGUST 2022*

It is with great concern that I have learned about the planned relocation of the people, currently living on the Central Railway line, to the Philippi Horticultural Area (PHA) in ward 43. This relocation is planned by HDA and PRASA, announced by National Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula *without consultation* with the ward councillor, Sub-Council 12 and 17 in Mitchell’s Plain or the host communities in the PHA, which includes the neighbouring farmers, residents of smallholdings and informal settlements.

I cannot support the relocation of more people to the area because of the current existing challenges in the area with existing informal settlements relating to *basic services* on land belonging to other spheres of government and private owners. *Crime* in the PHA is also spiralling out of control. Earlier this month I registered a formal complaint to the Provincial Commissioner of SAPS, Lt. Gen. Patekile regarding the lack of adequate policing in the PHA. Moving more people will exacerbate the problem.

Informal Settlements like Siqalo, Oasis and Egoli have been struggling without basic services like electricity for years because they are situated on private land and property owners refuse to give The City permission to provide those much needed services. To move more people to the area is a recipe for conflict and disaster.

While we all want our railway service to function properly as it should and have trains running on time. I also understand the importance to remove and relocate the residents from the Central Line BUT proper consultation should have been done with the host communities and all stakeholders. There also should have been an assessment done regarding the current situation and challenges in the area where they are planning to move the people to. Sadly, this was not done.

I therefore reject this decision.

PLEASE GIVE WAY TO FIRST RESPONDERS

Afternoon guys hope you all well, we have started something to highlight difficulties first responders have to deal with b4 getting to a scene or incident. It becomes more difficult and dangerous to get to whoever needs assistance. Motorists has become so reluctant in giving way for emergency response vehicles and we want to try and change that . They forget that it might be that the vehicle is onroute to a family member of theirs.
