FLYING BEYOND LIMITS: HOW ADA HELPED SHAPE A DRONE TECHNOLOGY PIONEER
The Agribusiness Development Agency proudly celebrates the remarkable journey and achievements of Mr. Andile Vilakazi, a visionary entrepreneur, drone technology specialist, and co-founder of Drone Eye Technology, whose success story continues to inspire innovation within the agricultural sector.
Mr. Vilakazi is a dynamic professional with a strong academic and technical background in environmental management and advanced drone technology. Holding a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Management with a major in Botany, he has combined scientific knowledge with technological innovation to create impactful farming expertise. As a Certified Drone Pilot accredited by the South African Civil Aviation Authority with a Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) rating, Mr. Vilakazi has positioned himself at the forefront of drone innovation in South Africa. His expertise extends beyond aviation, as he is also qualified in Occupational Health and Safety, Quality Assurance in Aviation, and serves as an Emergency Controller, further strengthening his capabilities in drone security operations and risk management.
His journey with ADA began when he approached the agency with an innovative concept focused on the application of drone technology in agriculture. Following an invitation to present his concept his proposal was exceptionally well received. This led to his selection in a fully funded drone pilot training programme sponsored by ADA. He demonstrated exceptional commitment and determination throughout the programme earning his Remote Pilot Certificate became a defining milestone that opened doors to numerous opportunities in innovation, entrepreneurship, and international collaboration.
Building on this momentum, Mr. Vilakazi actively participated in innovation and entrepreneurship competitions. His passion for advancing agricultural innovation through technology earned him international recognition after submitting a concept paper on innovation in agriculture to the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) Next Generation Programme. Shortly thereafter, he received the prestigious International IUPAC Next Generation Programme Participant Certificate under the category of Crop Protection and Education for Future Generations.
In the same year, his innovative work earned him first place at the University of South Africa 8th Annual Student Research and Innovation Showcase Competition. This achievement led to his recommendation for the highly regarded International Student Exchange Programme, through which he had the opportunity to visit University of Bordeaux and Paris-Saclay University.
The international exposure proved invaluable, enabling Mr. Vilakazi to engage with global researchers, academics, and innovators from diverse disciplines. These experiences significantly broadened his professional network and contributed immensely to the growth and development of Drone Eye Technology. His research during the programme focused on improving crop management through drone technology an area with immense potential to transform agricultural productivity and sustainability.
The establishment of Drone Eye Technology itself was inspired by extensive research into the role of drones in modern agriculture. Through his investigations, Mr. Vilakazi identified sustainability challenges and operational risks associated with conventional agricultural drone spraying practices.
Today, Mr. Andile Vilakazi stands as a shining example of how strategic support, innovation, and determination can create meaningful impact within the agricultural sector.
