uMshwathi Municipality Child Protection Week Campaign

In a significant demonstration of unity and commitment to the welfare of the youth, the uMshwathi Local Municipality’s Social Services Unit hosted a National Child Protection Week event on June 4, 2026 at the Cool Air Community Hall, Ward 7. The event served as a critical platform to address the pressing need for vigilance, education and collective action against child abuse.

The awareness programme was designed to educate local learners on the various forms of abuse and crucially to empower them with the knowledge of how to report such incidents. By fostering an environment of open communication, organizers aimed to break the silence surrounding abuse and ensure that children are equipped to protect their rights and wellbeing.

The gathering saw an impressive turnout of stakeholders committed to the safety of the municipality’s youngest citizens. Attendees included representatives from the uMshwathi Municipal Council, the Department of Social Development, the Department of Justice, the Dalton South
African Police Service, the Department of Education, and the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA). Also in attendance were local school Principals, Teachers, eager Learners and concerned members of the community, all united by the common goal of building a safer future for children.

Beyond the educational sessions, the day featured a touching community outreach initiative. Recognizing that protection extends to meeting basic needs, the Social Services Unit facilitated a winter school uniform handover. The initiative sought to ensure that all learners are protected from the harsh winter elements, providing them with the warmth and dignity necessary to focus on their academic pursuits.

The event concluded with a strong call for collaboration, urging all stakeholders and residents to join hands in raising awareness and fostering a community where the safety and protection of every
child remains a top priority.
