The IAIAsa (International Association for Impact Assessment South Africa) student division hosted a Student and Young Professionals workshop at the IAIAsa 2019 Conference. The aim of the workshop was to create a conducive environment for students to interact and network with professionals practicing within the Integrated Environmental Management (IEM) sector.

Highlight of the workshop was the speed mentoring session where students were given the opportunity to engage one-on-one with various mentors who attended the session.

Black Women In Science Founder (BWIS) Ndoni Mcunu interview on eNews! The discussion was around how can we open channels for young scientists wanting to enter the science field and how do we make the ones already in the space more market relevant.

Science has moved beyond the walls of the laboratory and there is a need to make it more relevant to both the private and government sector.

A true Geographer for Change!

Geographers for change presents a true geographer who advocates for change on a daily basis.

Ndoni Mcunu is not only an MSc Graduate and a current PhD candidate but also calls herself an ambassador of change towards increasing the number of black females in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)! She was recently featured in the Mail & Guardian list of 200 Young South Africans who strive to improve the lives of other people. She was recognized for this after founding a non-profit organization known as Black Women in Science (BWIS). Geographers for Change could not let go of the chance to find out more about the organization and find out what inspired Ndoni to take the road less traveled.

We first wanted to find out about the background and the aim of the organization, according to Ndoni the organization seeks to expose young women from disadvantaged communities to available careers in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). While doing this the organization aims to provide support in the way of guidance and mentorship to these young women, ultimately she hopes to even assist them with the financial challenges they come across when they have been accepted at Universities by way of leading them to various available funding houses. She added “what inspired BWIS was the realization that those who are privileged are not privileged by their own doing, but rather by the support, exposure to opportunities and guidance they receive from other people. True satisfaction and joy comes from going back and giving someone something you once took for granted”

Start with the end in mind!

Ultimately the bigger dream for the organization is to reach women across the African continent, she added. Through exposing, guiding, mentoring and providing financial support Ndoni believes it is possible to increase the number of black females graduating in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

Ndoni is a true inspiration to many young females and we hope that this story inspires you to become an advocate of change in your own community. If you are already or you know someone who is, please send us your (or their) story and we will gladly share it with world! Send it to – [email protected]

IAIAsa KZN Student Branch National Water Week celebration PART 2:

miniSASS is a simple tool which can be used by anyone to monitor the health of a river. This tool uses macroinvertebrates found in rivers to give a measure of the general health of a river. In celebration of National Water Week, IAIAsa KZN Student Branch decided to participate in the "miniSASS water is life challenge".

The chosen site for the miniSASS was the Foxhillspruit Canal stream which runs through Lindup Road in Scottsville, Pietermaritzburg. Some of the members from the student branch even brought their family members and everyone was ready to get their hands dirty on a lovely Saturday morning!

The miniSASS results for the site showed that the stream was in a very poor condition (Critically Modified) and the team identified some of the impacts that might have contributed to the condition.

Geographers For Change would like to give a thumbs up to the IAIAsa KZN Student Branch for all the initiatives done in celebration of the National Water Week!

IAIAsa KZN Student Branch National Water Week celebration PART 1:
From the 14th to the 22nd of March South Africa celebrates the National Water Week, this aims to encourage all South Africans to take care of our precious waters.

Rivers are known as the lifeline of human civilisations because of the many benefits they provide such as drinking water, water for commercial and industrial use as well as providing a habitat for many plants and animals living in these environments. Litter is considered to be among the leading pollution sources which impacts greatly on the health of our rivers. The uMsunduzi River running through Pietermaritzburg is no stranger to such impacts with many activities occurring near the river causing much litter and unfortunately after a good rain this litter then makes it way into the river.

A group of brave troops from the Golden Key International Honour Society's UKZN Pietermaritzburg chapter, in partnership with the IAIAsa KZN Student Branch, Habitable Planet Program, the SAYCC (South African Youth Climate Coalition) and a UKZN staff member made it their responsibility to help take care of our precious waters by embarking on a 6 km river clean-up/fun walk to help clean the uMsunduzi River! The journey began from the UKZN main campus and the group made their way down to the uMsunduzi river near Camps drift through Alexandra park picking up litter along the way. The litter was then gathered and placed on the roadside for a municipal truck to pick up. The event was very successful and the brave troops look to make this an annual event and hope for an even bigger turnout in the coming years.

On the 26th November the Enviro-Champs from Mpophomeni were at it again!

Joined by interns from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and GroundTruth, the group conducted a river walk on the uMthunzima stream which runs through the community of Mpophomeni. The long walk began downstream of the uMthunzima stream and ended upstream near the source of the stream, conducting water quality assessments (Minisass) as they made their way up.

The results obtained showed that the uMthunzima stream conditions improve as you move upstream, and this is likely due to the decline in impacts such as solid and sewage waste spillage which are concentrated downstream.
