A true Geographer for Change!
Geographers for change presents a true geographer who advocates for change on a daily basis.
Ndoni Mcunu is not only an MSc Graduate and a current PhD candidate but also calls herself an ambassador of change towards increasing the number of black females in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)! She was recently featured in the Mail & Guardian list of 200 Young South Africans who strive to improve the lives of other people. She was recognized for this after founding a non-profit organization known as Black Women in Science (BWIS). Geographers for Change could not let go of the chance to find out more about the organization and find out what inspired Ndoni to take the road less traveled.
We first wanted to find out about the background and the aim of the organization, according to Ndoni the organization seeks to expose young women from disadvantaged communities to available careers in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). While doing this the organization aims to provide support in the way of guidance and mentorship to these young women, ultimately she hopes to even assist them with the financial challenges they come across when they have been accepted at Universities by way of leading them to various available funding houses. She added “what inspired BWIS was the realization that those who are privileged are not privileged by their own doing, but rather by the support, exposure to opportunities and guidance they receive from other people. True satisfaction and joy comes from going back and giving someone something you once took for granted”
Start with the end in mind!
Ultimately the bigger dream for the organization is to reach women across the African continent, she added. Through exposing, guiding, mentoring and providing financial support Ndoni believes it is possible to increase the number of black females graduating in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
Ndoni is a true inspiration to many young females and we hope that this story inspires you to become an advocate of change in your own community. If you are already or you know someone who is, please send us your (or their) story and we will gladly share it with world! Send it to – [email protected]
