🧑🏽‍🏭🧑🏼‍🏫 Partnership to Develop Skills and Opportunities for Youth, Adopted

Yesterday, at a Special Mayoral Committee Meeting, a Game-Changing Memorandum of Understanding between the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality and Institutions of Higher Learning in the Metro was adopted.

The Metro recognises that for the city to reach its goals and objectives serious consideration should be given to initiating, building and maintaining relationships with citizens, communities, other spheres of government, organs of state, and institutions of higher and further learning which include Nelson Mandela University (NMU) and the Technical and Vocational Educational and Training Colleges (TVETs).

The NMBM engaged Nelson Mandela University (NMU), PE College and Eastcape Midlands College and agreed that a strategic agreement should be entered into that would facilitate the exchange of knowledge, promote youth development and provide opportunities for work-integrated experiential learning to students. This will in turn enable NMBM to achieve the growth and development related to social, economic and environmental goals within the city. All funding for these initiatives will be sourced by the Higher Learning institutions from the various SETAs with no financial obligation from the NMBM.

The value added to the NMBM through the collaboration will include:
− Employee capacity building
− Education and training
− Research possibilities
− Information exchange
− Access to resources

The value added to the institutions of further and higher learning through the collaboration will include:
− Research possibilities and student participation to assist students with gaining valuable skills while simultaneously contributing to the growth, improvement and development of the NMBM.
− Practical application with respect to projects identified by the NMBM which will count towards students’ thesis or dissertations.
− Work-integrated experiential learning opportunities for students.
− An opportunity for the higher learning institutions to collaborate with NMBM when placement is required for potential students who need work exposure in local government in order to complement their qualifications.

Nelson Mandela Bay is the economic powerhouse of the Eastern Cape. Unfortunately, our GDP per capita remains the lowest of all the metropolitan municipalities in South Africa. Through initiatives such as this, Nelson Mandela Bay can offer more opportunities to its people so that we can grow the economy and start to address the scourge of unemployment our residents face.

The Democratic Alliance Getting the Basics Right in Water and Sanitation

•Since January 2021, 20 799 water leaks have been repaired. 4 613 known leaks remain outstanding.

•On average, 763 leaks per week are being repaired.

•15 376 sewerage complaints have been addressed in total since January 2021. During the past two weeks, 538 (1 October) and 518 (10 October) sewerage complaints were addressed. The current average sewerage fault repair is 538 faults addressed per week. The Target set for the end of October is to reduce the number sewerage faults to 2500 (currently 5 510 faults remain outstanding).

Under a DA Government:

•A DA Government will ensure that communities are clean and safe.

•You will receive efficient services. We will ensure a 24-hour turnaround time where sewerage spills or blockages are concerned.

•We will invest in our water infrastructure as well as the Human Resources in our water services department so that the metro achieve a 48-hour turnaround time for fixing leaks.

Yesterday our federal council chairperson Helen Zille, our ward 32 candidate Cllr Pieter Hermaans and the team of activists did a door to door engagement with residents and business owners in Hillside and Cleary Estate. We need your vote to govern the Metro.

The high mast lights in Capricorn Street and Gail Road close to Virgo Street, Barcelona, Ext 5 are being fixed today.

Thank you to the ward office for escalating the matter. We know that residents were concerned regarding the darkness due to high mast lights being out of order. We apologise for the long wait.

Update on water

Today the water truck was stationed in Renecke Street where residents reported that there's no water. In Virgo Street we filled up the JoJo tanks to ensure that residents can have access to water.

Thank you to our dedicated staff and team of activists for their hard work.

URGENT ALERT!!!

UPDATE ON CRITICAL MAINTENANCE OF BULK PIPELINE

June 3, 2021

The critical maintenance that was being done on the Motherwell Chelsea bulk pipelines was completed last night around 23H00.

The line has been opened and reserviors are being filled up.

Filling up will take time as most of our supply reservoirs, including Bethelsdorp, Bloemodal, and Chelsea, are filling up after being depleted.

We anticipate that it will take the whole day for the system to fully recover.

Water tankers are being arranged and positions will be communicated shortly and can also be enquired from the call centre on 0800 20 5050.

We thank residents for their patience and apologize for the inconvenience caused.
