The City of Tshwane has successfully rolled out the first phase of its free Wi-Fi project to residents and students in Tshwane at open public spaces in line with the its long-term plan to provide free Wi-Fi to all government educational institutions in Tshwane by 2016, and to embrace digital technologies for the purposes of education and economic upliftment. The first phase provided capacity to 25

000 users in Hatfield, Church Square, Soshanguve, Mamelodi and the CBD. Over 60,000 unique users have accessed the Tshwane Free WiFi network, with average speeds of 7MB/s. With Phase 2 going live the City expects an exponential increase in traffic and positive impact on its communities

The roll out of the second phase will make the City of Tshwane the largest provider of free Wi-Fi in South Africa with capacity for 1 million users in public spaces at 213 schools in Soshanguve, Mamelodi and Atteridgeville. Whereas the first phase provided one access point every 14 weeks, the second phase will provide one access point every two days, which is seven times faster. Collaboration with Project Isizwe, a non-profit making global movement that aims to provide free internet to Africa, has ensured successfully installion of a fully managed free internet zone (FIZ) to the Tshwane University of Technology’s Soshanguve Campus, the University of Pretoria’s Hatfield Campus, Tshwane North College, Mamelodi Community Centre and Church Square. Each FIZ location allows users with Wi-Fi enabled devices such as mobile phones, tablets, laptops and desktop computers to access free internet without any logins or passwords. Please visit www.tshwane.gov.za to find your hotspot and a list of the 213 schools.

Media Release

TshWi-Fi reaches 2 million unique users

29 August 2016

Tshwane Free Wi-Fi - the biggest free public Wi-Fi network on the African continent - is celebrating the service’s biggest milestone to date: 2 million South Africans living and working in the low-income communities of Tshwane have been brought online in the Capital City.

The innovative Free Wi-Fi initiative, which began in 2013, has rolled out 921 Free Internet Zones across public areas in the City. The 2 million unique users have enjoyed more than 106 million online sessions, using more than 2289 TB of data. TshWi-Fi currently has more than 90 000 users accessing the service daily, with up to 10 000 concurrent users.

The innovative project, recently awarded as the Most Innovative Government Program to bridge the Digital Divide (World Wi-Fi Day Awards), has enabled more than two thirds of Tshwane’s population to access high-speed, reliable internet.

Earlier this year, TshWi-Fi increased its service to users, who are given 500MB of free internet data per day. Although only about 7% of users reach this cap, this unparalleled service means that citizens who would otherwise be paying high mobile rates, are able to access the internet free of charge, benefitting from the many resources and world of opportunity that being online enables.

Tshwane’s newly appointed executive mayor, Solly Msimanga is excited about this achievement and looks forward to seeing the extension of the TshWi-Fi network. “I applaud the officials of the City and our service providers who are working to bring more and more of our people online. We will work to expand the Wi-Fi network, the internet speed and connection quality under this new Tshwane government, and we will work to get more communities onto free Wi-Fi than ever before,” he said.

The City showcased its free Tshwi-Fi project at the Highway Africa Conference held in Grahamstown this past weekend. The conference was hosted by Rhodes University’s School of Journalism and Media Studies and was attended by journalism students and scholars as well as journalists from Africa. Tshwane participated in Local Government Day together with the South African Local Government Association and South African Cities Network.

FACT SHEET ABOUT THE MULTICHOICE DISKI CHALLENGE

The MultiChoice Diski Challenge (MDC) is MultiChoice’s flagship corporate responsibility programme which consists of three core elements:
• A 16-team football development league competition in partnership with the Premier Soccer League (PSL) which will fast track the development of young players into the first teams of the PSL league
• Life skills and leadership development of the young football players
• An internship programme of 43 aspiring broadcasting professionals gaining practical experience in various areas of broadcasting with SuperSport.

The football competition
The MultiChoice Diski Challenge is a three-year partnership with the PSL with the focus on building the PSL’s Reserve League in order to fast track the clubs’ under 23 players into their first league teams.

The format of the football competition is a 16-team league, with each team playing every other team once. This means that a total of 120 matches will be played (16 teams will play 15 games each). The team with the most points – that is the team at the top of the log table, at the end of the tournament’s match day 15 will become the champions of MultiChoice Diski Challenge season 2.

Season 2 of the MultiChoice Diski tournament will kick off on Saturday, 5 September 2015 and wrap up in February 2016.

The winning team will win a trip to Holland for a 4-day training camp at the Royal Netherlands Football Association (KNVB).

Football player development
The league will provide a platform for young players to showcase their talent and fast track their transition into professional football.

Players will have an opportunity to interact with football legends and receive life and leadership skills training during the course of the programme. A seven-day life skills camp will be conducted for all the participating players across all 16 teams during the December 2015 period.

At the end of the competition in February 2016, MultiChoice will offer each team an opportunity to nominate three players to attend 7-day leadership development programme to build their leadership capacity.

MultiChoice will offer up to 30 players who have an interest in broadcast careers an opportunity to attend a one week career conference at the MultiChoice campus in Randburg. The conference will offer the players in-depth exposure to career paths in the broadcast environment and will include panel discussions with our executives, engineers, producers and technicians.

Sports broadcasting internships
The MultiChoice Diski Challenge gives upcoming production interns the chance to gain practical experience on and off the field in recording and producing live MultiChoice Diski Challenge matches for SuperSport. These young producers will also receive mentoring and coaching from experienced producers, engineers and other broadcasting professionals.

43 production interns, 17 of whom are female will form part of the production teams that consists of production assistants, assistant producers, directors, EVS operators, graphics, camera operators etc.

An 11 episode magazine show on the competition will also be produced by the interns. The show will be broadcast on SuperSport to showcase all the behind the scenes activities of the competition as well as profile players, coaches and other role-players.

SuperSport will be responsible for all the content production including the recruitment, management and training of production interns for the production of the live content and magazine show.

MultiChoice will also offer five fully paid academic scholarships to qualifying players and interns as a further means to professional development and advancement.

Broadcasting the MultiChoice Diski Challenge
SuperSport will be the primary carrier of the games on the DStv platform – with live matches broadcast primarily on SuperSport Select (DStv channel 210) and SuperSport 4 HD (DStv channel 204), depending on channel scheduling.

MultiChoice will also give community TV channels on its DStv platform the opportunity to broadcast the televised games from the MultiChoice Diski Challenge live, thereby increasing the exposure of the young players and allowing their communities to follow their journeys and experience their triumphs. Community TV channels will have the option to cover the games that will not be broadcast by SuperSport.
