Treating your toilets and sinks like trash disposal units might seem convenient, but it is one of the leading causes of costly plumbing nightmares and municipal infrastructure failures.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀:

Non-biodegradable items like wet wipes, hygiene products, and dental floss do not dissolve in water. Instead, they tangle together, catching hair and grease to form massive, impenetrable clogs.

▪︎ 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗽𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗮𝘁𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘀:
Pouring cooking oils and fats down the kitchen sink causes them to solidify as they cool. Over time, they line the pipes and bond with other debris, eventually forming monstrous "fatbergs" that block entire neighbourhood sewer mains.

▪︎ 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗿𝘀:
Clearing a main sewer line backup or repairing a damaged home plumbing system often requires expensive professional intervention.

▪︎ 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲:
When municipal sewer systems become overwhelmed by clogs, raw sewage can overflow into local waterways, harming ecosystems, wildlife. The overflow onto the roads and walkways pose a serious risk to public health.

𝗙𝗜𝗥𝗘 𝗢𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗥𝗜𝗗𝗚𝗘
Yesterday early evening saw a fire engulfing the Little Falls Ridge Nature Reserve behind the homes in Little Falls. Starting behind Witwatersrand Avenue, the fierce blaze moved upwards and westwards along the ridge.

Our local security teams Beagle Watch Armed Response and West Rand Reaction Unit reported the incident and co-ordinated on the ground whilst providing feedback to the forum. Four teams worked vigorously through the night and into the early hours of this morning to contain the blaze.

We commend the Eagles View Wellness Centre staff and the neighbouring residents who assisted the mountain ridge residents who were affected, a true testament to the strength of our community. We are pleased to report that there were no known injuries, though unfortunately, one house did sustain fire damage.

Thank you to the capable firefighters from City of Joburg EMS and FIRE OPS SA who worked tirelessly through the evening to extinguish the fire.
