SPS update part 2!

After 2 days of storms and a level 8 weather warning - a first for our little sanctuary.

We powered through it with all our amazing volunteers and helpers!

We lost power along with most of Klapmuts in early hours of Monday morning. Thank goodness for our generator on loan along with some very clever people to help us hook up lights inside HQ.

Our main issue was the river coming up and flooding-related issues. Luckily we managed to divert the worst of the water with gullys, pipes and some very clever water management.
All our birds are safe and cozy!

Southern Parrot Sanctuary even helped Exotic Animal World evacuate one of their aviaries, some of those birdies are now in HQ talking to new and old feathered friends alike❤️🦜

A huge shout out to everyone who braved the wet conditions to help our rescues!

Updates from Parrot HQ

The calm before the storm 🌧️🦜

It's been all hands on deck at Parrot HQ, getting ready for the severe weather warning ⚠️

We've been hard at work securing & reinforcing enclosures and fetching branches for our aviary birds to roost in & our inside birds to play with.
We've even secured a genorator for the probable power outage.

All of this is done with love to make sure our birds stay safe, warm, and comfortable through the storm 🫶

Thank you to everyone supporting, donating, and checking in on the sanctuary. It means the world to us and the flock 🦜

Meet our favourite tree!🌳Erythrina lysistemon AKA the Lucky Bean Tree or Common Coral Tree.

These striking flowering trees are vital for species like the Brown-headed Parrot and Cape Parrot, providing both a rich food source and safe roosting spots! 🦜

But their impact doesn’t stop there… They support entire ecosystems, from insects and nectar-feeding birds to small mammals, and even larger animals like black rhinos and elephants 🐘

At Parrot HQ, we’re lucky to have two of these lucky bean trees and we can’t wait to see them burst into bloom ❤️
