🐺 Dominance doesn't always come with teeth.

Watch the female closely.

She is the one doing the posturing — using her body position, movement and presence to assert herself in this interaction. The male, meanwhile, adopts the more submissive position and is the one snapping in response.

It’s a fascinating example of why wolf behaviour cannot be understood simply by looking at who bares their teeth or makes the most noise.

Wolves communicate through their entire bodies: posture, position, facial expression, movement, distance and vocalisation all form part of the conversation.

And despite the old idea of an “alpha male” always being in charge, wolf social relationships are far more nuanced than that. Females can absolutely display dominant behaviour towards males, just as males can towards females.

Sometimes the wolf showing the teeth isn't the one holding the stronger position.

Watch the body language. It tells a much bigger story. 🐺

You can look back without going back. 🐺
The past shaped you. It doesn’t have to hold you.

A dance as old as the wild itself… 🐺🤍🐺
A step forward. A turn. A pause. A reply.
No choreography, no rehearsal — just two wolves moving together to a rhythm entirely their own.
For a moment, it feels as though the rest of the world simply disappears… and all that remains is the dance. ✨

Sometimes, the most powerful thing we can do is simply be still. 🐺

As winter slowly begins to loosen its grip here in the Southern Hemisphere, and summer starts drawing to a close for our friends in the north, it feels like one of those moments to stop and reflect.

This year has already carried its share of challenges. There have been difficult days, changes, losses, lessons… and moments that have asked more of us than we expected.

And then there is Kardan.

Completely content. Completely present. Not worrying about yesterday or what tomorrow might bring. Just soaking up the moment — with those beautiful yellow eyes, an enormous yawn, and a rather impressive set of canines. 🐺💛

Animals have a wonderful way of reminding us that life doesn’t always have to be rushed.

Sometimes we need to rest.
Sometimes we need to simply exist.
And sometimes, being at peace in the moment is enough.

As we head into Women’s Day here in South Africa tomorrow, perhaps that is a reminder worth carrying with us too — strength doesn’t always have to be loud. Sometimes strength is knowing when to soften, when to rest, and when to simply breathe.

From Kardan and all of us at Tsitsikamma Wolf Sanctuary, may the changing seasons bring a little gentleness with them. 🌿🐺

Watch Nilak's eyes. 👀
That little sideways glance at Anuk lasts only a second, but it says more than words ever could. Wolves are masters of subtle communication—body posture, eye contact, and tiny movements often keep the peace without the need for conflict.
Nature rarely shouts... it whispers. 🐺💛

Today, our hearts are a little heavier.

Today we said goodbye to our beautiful Maphe, who crossed the Rainbow Bridge at almost 18 years of age.

Maphe was one of the gentlest souls to ever call Tsitsikamma Wolf Sanctuary home. She carried a quiet grace that touched everyone who had the privilege of meeting her. While her body had grown old, her spirit remained as beautiful as ever.

She leaves behind an empty space that cannot be filled, but also countless memories that will never fade. We are incredibly grateful for every year, every moment, and every lesson she gave us.

Run free now, sweet Maphe. May your paws be light, your forests endless, and your spirit forever wild.

Thank you to everyone who loved her, supported her, and kept her in your hearts over the years. We know many of you will mourn her alongside us.

Rest peacefully, beautiful girl. You will always be part of our family. 🤍🌈🐺

It's impossible not to get lost in Ra's striking yellow eyes. 💛
Focused. Curious. Always taking in the world around him. 🐺
If Ra's story touches your heart and you'd like to help us continue caring for him and the rest of our wolves, you'll find ways to support our sanctuary in our bio. Every act of kindness, big or small, truly makes a difference. 🤍

Think the male is always the boss? Think again. 🐺
In wolf packs, females often play a powerful leadership role. They can be every bit as assertive as the males—and when she makes her opinion known, he isn't afraid to answer back! Healthy communication isn't always quiet... sometimes it comes with a few bared teeth. 😉
We're a small non-profit sanctuary, and every wolf in our care depends on the kindness of people who choose to support our work. If you'd ever like to be part of their journey, you'll find the different ways to help in our bio. Every bit of support is genuinely appreciated. ❤️🐺
