DA rejects Greater Tzaneen Municipality’s substandard welcome sign and demands answers

The Democratic Alliance (DA) rin the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) rejects the substandard and unsightly welcome sign erected by the GTM and calls for urgent answers and accountability over its cost, quality, procurement, and approval, and payment.

The DA was the only party in the Greater Tzaneen Council to reject the municipality’s Integrated Development Plan (IDP) , Service Delivery and Budget Implementation Plan, (SDBIP) and budget because of the gross misalignment between spending priorities and the urgent service delivery needs of residents.

The money spent on this poor-quality sign should instead have been directed towards maintaining and repairing the municipality’s failing infrastructure.

At a time when residents face deteriorating roads, unreliable services and neglected infrastructure, this expenditure is an insult to loyal ratepayers and residents.

The municipality must disclose:

• the total cost of the sign;
• the contractor or service provider appointed;
• the procurement process followed;
• who approved the appointment;
• who certified that the work had been completed to the required standard;
• who authorised and signed off on the payment; and
• why this expenditure was prioritised over essential service delivery.

Residents deserve value for money, proper oversight and accountability for every rand spent.
