🌳 THE RIGHT TREE—PLANTED IN THE WRONG PLACE

A young White Essenhout (Ekebergia capensis) had to be removed in Tony Laws Street, Aqua Park.

This beautiful indigenous tree had unfortunately been planted far too close to the house many years ago. As it grew, most of its canopy began extending over the roof.

The continuous dropping and accumulation of leaves created ongoing roof-maintenance problems, while the homeowner struggled with recurring roof leaks. The tree eventually had to be removed so the roof could be properly accessed and repaired.

Relocating the tree would have been our preferred option. Unfortunately, it had already become too large and established for relocation to be economically practical.

As professional arborists and tree lovers, removal is never automatically our first recommendation. However, even a beautiful tree can become unsuitable when it was planted in the wrong position from the beginning.

This is why choosing the correct species and allowing enough space for its mature size are so important when planting.

🌴 COCOS PALM REMOVED – ARBOR PARK, TZANEEN

A mature Cocos Palm (Syagrus romanzoffiana), also known as a Queen Palm, had to be removed after its roots began damaging the property’s foundation.

The working space was restricted by an electric fence and nearby fibre cables, leaving very little room for error. Our team carefully controlled the removal to protect the surrounding infrastructure.

Responsible arboriculture is not about saving every tree or cutting down every tree—it is about making the correct professional decision.

When a healthy tree can be safely pruned and managed, we will always recommend preserving it. However, when roots are actively causing structural damage and pruning cannot solve the problem, removal becomes the responsible option.

That is the difference between simply cutting trees and professionally assessing them.

🌳 SHAPED, SAVED AND STILL STANDING – VALENCIA ESTATE

Two White Essenhout trees (Ekebergia capensis) were professionally pruned and shaped in Valencia Estate, Aqua Park.

When a tree’s canopy becomes too large for its surroundings, an ordinary tree feller may immediately see another tree to cut down. After all, removal is often the quickest and biggest job.

A professional arborist asks a far more important question: Does this tree genuinely need to be removed?

When a tree remains healthy and structurally sound, and its roots are not causing unavoidable damage, responsible canopy reduction and corrective pruning can often allow it to remain safely in its position.

Simply cutting down every second tree because it has become large is not professional tree care—it is irresponsible and unnecessary.

A chainsaw can remove a mature tree in a day. Professional knowledge and sound arboricultural judgement can preserve it for decades.

At Rautenbach Holdings, we will always tell a client when a tree can be saved—even when removing it would have meant a larger job for us. We are arborists first, and our responsibility is to recommend what is best for the tree, the property and the client.

These two beautiful Essenhout trees were carefully reduced, balanced and shaped while retaining their natural appearance. They can now remain part of the property for many more years. 🌿
