Social Housing Regulatory Authority SHRA is an entity of the Department of Human Settlements and is responsible for the implementation of the social housing (rental) programme.

Today 20th August 2026 is the Day 1 of Introduction to Social Housing Training in Western Cape province support for the implementation of social housing in the Garden Route to level the distribution across the province, attract more SHI's / ODA's and encourage the establishment of new SHI's/ODA's within a region (district), and provide the systems and mechanisms for start-up and sustainability.
Locally based SHI's, ODA's and developers could potentially lower operational and development cost.
• Manage risks which threaten development at scale while at the same time incorporating an enabling role at an economic level.

The SHRA Team and Facilitator take through the MP Stakeholder in training on the Introduction to Social Housing introducing this rental programme of Human Settlements. Listening attentively and actively engaging as they were taken through the criteria and the purpose of the Introduction to Social Housing Programme on how to become the social housing partner in building the project and tenanting as this is the foundation to partnership with the SHRA as the regulator and funder.

As the regulator of the social housing sector, SHRA plays a critical role in enabling quality rental housing for low- to middle-income households. This session is the opportunity to reflect, reset, and re-energise as we work towards a transformed and sustainable housing sector.

The Social Housing Regulatory Authority participated at by celebrating women who are making meaningful contributions to the human settlements sector.

SHRA provided women-owned businesses with an opportunity to showcase their products, building materials and services at the Empower Her Market Trade Fair, taking place at the Olive Convention Centre in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.

Organised by the Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities the Trade Fair seeks to:
* Promote women’s entrepreneurship and increase the visibility of women-owned businesses.
* Facilitate networking, trade and market access opportunities.
* Encourage procurement from women-owned enterprises.
* Provide access to information, finance, mentorship and innovation support.
* Strengthen collaboration among women in business.

Today, the Social Housing Regulatory Authority (SHRA) is attending the Western Cape Infrastructure Ministerial Roundtable at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC), bringing together leaders from across government and the infrastructure sector to shape the future of infrastructure delivery in South Africa.

The roundtable is attended by the Minister of Human Settlements, the Premier of the Western Cape, and is hosted by the Western Cape Provincial Minister of Infrastructure. The engagement provides an important platform to strengthen collaboration, share insights, and explore innovative approaches to infrastructure investment and delivery that support economic growth and improved quality of life for all South Africans.

The SHRA Council, led by its Chairperson, Ms Pulane Thobejane, undertook a project oversight visit to the Kimberley Hull Street social housing development to assess project progress and implementation. During the visit, the Council received a presentation from the CEO of SASIHC, who outlined the project's status and highlighted the key challenges affecting its delivery.

The oversight visit concluded with a SHRA Council meeting, during which the Council considered the quarterly reports, reviewed organisational performance and governance matters, and discussed key issues requiring oversight and strategic direction.
