Today, as we commemorate Youth Month, we honor the courageous youth of 1976 who stood up against the oppressive Bantu Education system. Their determination and sacrifice sparked a movement that changed the course of South Africa’s history. The blood of these young lions watered the tree of freedom, paving the way for the opportunities we strive for today!

We [Ward 13] stand on the shoulders of heroes like Tsietsi Mashinini, Hastings Ndlovu, and Hector Pieterson, and many other young freedom fighters whose bravery inspired generations to continue the struggle of equality and justice. Alongside them, countless young freedom fighters made the townships ungovernable, demanding justice and equality. Their legacy lives on in every young person who continues to fight for quality education and equal opportunities.

As the ANC Youth League, we remain committed to advancing the dreams of those who came before us. Forward to quality education and opportunities for all young people! Let us never forget the power of youth to transform society.

Honouring the journey, the sacrifices, and the unity that brought us here.

Nkonyane Kandaba – S'busiso Ngema (Sarafina!)Wathinta thina... Wathint' abangas' okufa!
Safa saphenduka... Saphenduk' inj' ebovu!
We Nkonyane KaNdaba... Kwanyakaz' imikhonto!

This song is not just music — it is a war cry from the youth of 1976. It reminds us that when the apartheid regime touched us, they awakened those who do not fear death. Even when they killed us, we rose again — more fierce, more determined, like a red bull charging forward.

Our generation stood at the forefront of the struggle. School children became soldiers for freedom. They sharpened their spears (their voices, their unity, their courage) and declared: "You can wound us, but you cannot stop us. We are coming!"

Comrades, as the ANC Youth League, this is our inheritance. The struggle did not end in 1994. Today we fight new battles: against inequality, unemployment, corruption, poverty, and anything that threatens the dignity of our people.Let this song ignite the fire in us. The spirit of Sarafina, the spirit of Soweto, the spirit of Nkonyane Kandaba lives in every young person who refuses to accept oppression in any form.

On this day, we draw strength from our rich history of youth resistance. The ANC Youth League was formed in 1944 to awaken the spirit of militancy and renewal in our struggle. Years later in July 1969, SASO emerged as another powerful youth force under Steve Biko, teaching us the importance of pride, self-reliance and unity.

That same revolutionary energy continues to live in us today.
As the ANCYL, we stand ready to play our part in building a better South Africa — fighting unemployment, expanding opportunities for young people, and pushing for economic transformation that leaves no one behind.

Young Lions — the future belongs to those who prepare and organise for it. Let’s honour our ancestors by working together for real progress!Economic Freedom and Social Change: Now, Not Later!

Looking back at the first phase of the Voter Registration Weekend in Ward13, it was truly inspiring!
Many young people registered for the first time, and some came to re-register. The beautiful smiles on their faces said it all as they stood next to our dedicated ANC Councillor of Ward 13(Cllr. F KEFU).
They were so happy, energised and ready to cast their very first vote coming the 4th of November 2026. Moments like these make the work worthwhile. Thank you to all the youth who came out and took this important step!
We are building a stronger Ward 13 together.
