Heritage. Music. Culture. Community. Wakkerstroom History Weekend — 23–25 October.

Wakkerstroom’s food scene is one of its quiet superpowers — a mix of cosy, character‑filled restaurants and passionate local chefs who turn simple ingredients into something memorable.

During History Weekend, the town levels up even further: expect bustling food stalls serving everything from hearty farm‑style meals and fresh‑baked treats to artisanal snacks, gourmet boerie rolls, decadent desserts and proudly South African flavours. Whether you’re sitting down for a slow meal at one of Wakkerstroom’s beloved eateries or grabbing something delicious between events, the weekend is packed with fantastic food and warm hospitality that feels unmistakably Wakkerstroom.

During both the Anglo-Boer wars, members of the Wakkerstroom Commando played a significant role. In 1881 some were involved at the battles of Laingsnek and Majuba.

From October 1899 under General Lukas Meyer, they participated in the Battles of Talana and Colenso, to name a few. Notably, they captured 12 artillery guns from the British forces commanded by General Buller.

This battle became particularly infamous as Lieutenant Freddie Roberts, son of Lord Roberts, died during the attempt to reclaim the guns.

A small town with a big history.

Celebrate 167 years in Wakkerstroom this October.
